Hello everyone! My first post as a member of this forum. I just purchased a 2005 Toyota Tacoma TRD SR5 on Saturday. The dealer was about 2.5 hours away. After buying it I drove it home and drove it around yesterday with no problems. This morning the check engine light was on. I was able to find out the codes, but I don't really know what they mean. They don't sound good to me though. This really sucks because just buying the truck was a stretch for me. I can't afford major repairs right off the bat.

    The codes are:
    P043E
    P043F
    P2401
    P2402
    P0430
    P1900

Along with finding out what these mean, I would also like to know if I can continue to drive it before something really bad happens. The truck seems to be running fine.

Also, I did notice that the coolant is low and that I could smell where it was leaking. I noticed that the hose coming out of the bottom of the container had been cut about 2-3 inches down and sealed off. Why would someone do this? What issues could this cause? Like I said, the truck seems to be running fine and temperature is fine as well.

Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

Most of these seem to be related to the EVAP system in the truck. Before doing anything, I would fill her up with gas and make sure the gas cap is screwed on tightly. If need be, just reset the codes and see if they come back on.

Thanks guitarjamman. I just filled up yesterday and have a little less than 3/4 of a tank. I did check the gas cap and tightened it. It did seem to be a little loose, but that could have been my imagination and hoping for a simple solution.

The P1900 is the one that worries me. I tried googling it and didn't find much info, although I did see a comment on a thread relating to the transmission. Please don't let it be a transmission problem! That's the last thing I need right now!

    Thank you as well, gearcruncher.

All the codes except for 1 are emission issues. Yu have a bad cat, a clogged canister and other stuff wrong. You need to go through the system. Code P1900 is Outpost shaft speed sensor Circuit Intermittent Malfunction.

Transmission issues can usually be felt/heard/smelled, etc. before they throw codes. I have no idea what that code means, but unless your transmission is acting up, I wouldn't worry too much.

P0430 I believe means your downstream O2 sensor is bad.

Can you dumb this down for me? Also, how urgent is this and will it affect daily driving?

P043E - evap emissions system reference orifice clogged/high follow
    P043F - same thing
    P2401&02 - same thing
P0430- it has to do with with cats or 02 sensors, would need to test
P1900- depending on motor and options I'm pretty sure it's a tranny code.

P1900 is the only one I'd worry about until it's time to do emissions. But the light came on as soon as you bought it, in Arizona they would have to fix it.. I'd take it back. If they don't fix it all I'd return it or call a lawyer.

I don't know if you'd get all those codes for the gas cap or not, but right after buying my 07 my check engine light came on. I freaked out and took it back. It was just the gas cap.

Toyota cats are super expensive, I have not yet found an aftermarket one that will get a Toyota through emissions for more than 10 minutes. Plus upstream 02 sensors are cheaper. Wouldn't worry about it to much until emissions time.

So it's something with for a while while I save up the dough?

I'm really freaking out about the possible transmission issue.

You wont do any damage if code 1900 pops up again . Usually the computer will put your transmission into garage mode to get you home . The most common problem is a faulty output speed sensor and is fairly cheap to diagnose and replace .

Might have cracked vacuum hoses or exhaust leaks causing you to get those codes as well. Listen to the engine bay for any strong continuous hissing. If you have any that is a definitive vacuum leak. You can also spray around the engine bay, and see if any specific area causes a change in the idle.

Being that yours is an '05, your vacuum hoses will almost certainly have splits at their ends.
