Extended warranties?

So, how many of you get warranties? I've purchased 3 warranties in the past (2 were on a Chevy S-10 and a Chevy Cavalier) and have not had enough problems to ever make up the cost.

I figure since this is a refreshed design, and I tend to want to hold a car for 10+ years, >175 k miles, it's good for piece of mind. But I'm wondering if I got suckered into buying something that I don't need.

BTW, on my 2016 I opted for a 10yr/100k extension.

 

I did an extended warranty as well. It goes against everything I stand for but it's a just in case due to a redesigned model.

 

Get a Platinum, not Gold...

 

Yea, I picked the platinum. I hope I don't have to use it, but then again I hope I do. Insurance and warranties always bug me cause it feels like money down the toilet if you don't use it!

 

Right on, I got the 6/75000 platinum for 610 bucks from Toby. 2wd double cab sport

 

My dealer was going to charge me about $2,000 for the extended warranty. I told them I never heard it cost so much. Said I was thinking about it if it was in the $750 range. Something did not seem right. Hearing some of you guys quote lower amounts makes me wonder whether this dealer was underwriting it themselves or using a more expensive third party.

BTW, if any of you have Geico call them. They also offer the extended warranty plan. The last time I spoke to them the total payments on it came to about $750. Plus, you have until the truck is over a year old before you have to decide.

 

The warranty I purchased from Toby is a TFS warranty, genuine toyota. The warranties here in the southeast region are through fidelity and the states regulate them. That same warranty from my dealer was nearly 1700 bucks. Either way I am thankful for the info I read here on the forum where I learned about all of this. Very appreciative !

 

I got the 10yr/100K for $1K or thereabouts ... only due to the new engine/drivetrain.

 

my dealer offered me that i declined. i contacted another toyota dealer on the east coast i have bought extended warranty before. when i told them about the 10yr/100K by dealer offered they said toyota does not off a 10 year warranty and i questioned my dealer and they confessed it was a 3rd party warranty. the dealer on the east quoted 8yr/75K miles for $835. i will be getting that due like others first model year.

I had one once, came with the car I bought off someone who paid for it when they originally bought it. Was useless to me I always had to fight with the dealer to get them to do something under warranty. Besides I don't like dealer work. If my mechanic offered me an extended warranty I'd do it because I trust his work lol

Main reason I have't bought a taco yet is waiting to make sure there aren't any huge problems. I cant see there being too many issues though, nothing is actually new to toyota on the truck, just newly used in the taco. But still rather just wait to be safe, besides then I can put an even better down payment.

 

I just bought the 7 year/100k mile for $1000 when I picked up my truck (DCSB Limited 4x4). Original "best price" they offered was $1925.

 

A majority of the time they are a waste of money. After all the dealer doesn't sell them to lose money.

Reason why I don't buy them:
#1 I hate dealer maintained cars. I probably wouldn't even take advantage of the free service they give with the new car.
#2 Cost for fixing cars can be controlled to a certain extent. Don't have shysters fix your car and usually problems aren't earth shattering to fix.
#3 If I have severe problems with a car, I'm not keeping it. It's gone, so the warranty is lost anyways
#4 If I have severe problems, may fall under Lemon Law
#5 Probably never going to need it anyways.

For these reasons I self insure.
After 8 years with two F250's; my husband has had a Beemer, Cadillac, Civic, and now a VW and we have had no reasons to feel we need to buy special warranties. And we have only bought used vehicles, his have usually been beaters.

Another way I look at it, I feel like I'm betting money my car is going to break down. If I felt that was the case, I wouldn't buy that car to begin with. I know something can always happen but I'm better off accepting the cost when it does rather than making a bet. I'd rather have the chance I keep my money than a guaranteed loss of it.
You really think you'll lose more $750 or $2,000 or however much you paid in repairs on a car outside of routine maintenance? Really?
Again why buy a car you are betting is going to be a piece of crap. Never got that.

I always get a good laugh at there sale pitch trying to sell me this. Biggest money waister EVER!

 

7yr/100k warranty for $1k. Call it what you want, but after my '08 F250 Diesel I'll never not buy the extended warranty on any vehicle purchase.

On my 08, I just said "fuck it" throw it in. Was a little skeptical with the new design and new motor. Little did I know that extended warranty would came in handy when I only paid a $100 deductible for a $5k injector/EGR meltdown 62k miles in. Also had a starter take a shit during the extended warranty. That was another $900 job (Diesel starters are a MFer!) for $100 deductible. I'd say it was well worth it.

 

I was told by a dealer that they like having warranty work done because it means their guys get paid for extra hours, that they dont try and fight fixing stuff. which is funny because they always put up a big stink

read the fine print. anything under warranty is not required to be repaired with new parts. It just has to be fixed to make it work again, whether its new parts or not. They often use used parts because they are cheaper and it works. I had two wiper motors fixed under warranty within three months. 6 months after the last one car was no longer under warranty and had it done by my mechanic. When he took it out he said it was way too worn to have been only 6 months old. It was used. Ended up looking it up and yes it was fully a used part.

I know Honda, VW, Audi, GM, Ford and Dodge do this. Not sure of toyota though but I wouldn't doubt they do it as well.

 

Anyone remember the guy who bought a Tacoma and the dealer said he would throw in an extended warranty for the remaining miles or a 100k for 100$?

Then the buyer said OK and shortly after the transmission ended up failing and he got a new one at like 98k miles lol.

I would say 800-1000$ go for it, assuming you're not going to wheel/mod the crap out of your truck with things that can void your warranty.

 

I keep thinking of possibly getting just to cover the time I am financing, but I will probably void it anyways lol
I'll need to ask the dealer what exactly I can do and cannot do to the truck in regards to voiding. If all the things I want to do void it, not worth getting.

Some reason I feel if I got an ARB locker like I plan to, they'll say that voids it for anything drivetrain related. Then again I'm more worried about the powertrain.
