This is my first time lifting and putting bigger tires on the taco. Speedometer calibrator is recommended or can you go w/out it? Thanks

Go without. When you resell, it'll show less mileage than you've actually driven. Just do the math correctly and you can figure mpgs easily. Also, the speedo won't be as far off as you might think. With 33s, I'm going 75 when my speedo reads right about 70. With 31.5s (265/75/16) your speedo will be accurate.

Hypertech makes a cost effective device to reprogram your speedo.

Re-program. That way your speedo and odometer will be tracking on the changes in your suspension. Not only will it save you some calculation, but you also won't be that douche trying to lie about your mileage when selling your truck.

I say recalibrate I did the same to my old truck and got a ticket for speeding when I didn't think I was because my speedometer was 8 to 12 mph slower then I was going, and I assumed it was due to bigger tires, so I'd say yeah recalibrate to protect your self atleast, much less the people you might sell the vehicle off to in good faith.

I use a digital GPS display for speedometer. Its built into my radar detector and I mounted it at eye level on the dash. The model is 9500ix made by escort. My tires are 285/70/17 real world (i keep tire pressure at about 30) and tires measure right under 33". Real world GPS verified at about 70 mph according to the oem in dash speedometer I am really going about 75-76 mph. I guess technically I use 3 GPS's for speed calculation, my NAV has speedometer and cell phone has speedometer also. Escort is most accurate. Side note, after I got multiple GPS speed indicators, I realized I kinda got screwed by the factory! With the in dash oem speedometer showing 70 MPH, I was actually going about 1.4 MPH less! So for every hundred miles I drove, I got screwed out of a couple miles of my warranty!

Spend the money on a good radar detector or other fun toy that makes life easier man. I once sent my 9500 in for repairs, it took a week to get back. I know I sound like a little girl saying this, but I was almost petrified driving that week. For the first time in my life I realized how far you travel at highway speeds every time you look down at the oem dash speedometer. LOL, everytime I took my eyes off the road and looked down it scared the hell out of me. LOL! I know how it sounds, but man its true, whether you use your cell phone, or other device, just having your speed shown to your right strait ahead makes a world of difference. Try it, you never look back :)

    Hope that helps some...

I've got 265/75/r16 Duratracs. A few days ago, I was helping a couple buddies who happen to be local LEO's. They were training on the use of a new radar gun. I was their "moving target". After a few dozen test runs, I came to the realization that my speedo is EXACTLY right....What it reads on the dashboard is the EXACT speed shown on the police radar that had just been calibrated.

Strongly disagree. Speedometer and odometer can and usually are off different amounts. With OEM tires, speedometer read 2-3 mph high (true 60, speedometer 62-63), odometer was off less than 1 mile per 100 traveled. New Michelins, OEM size, odometer reads about 2% low (records 98 miles compared to 100 by GPS or mile markers). Not like the old days when speedo/odometer were the same gauge driven by a cable from the transmission.

Good point, I am going to do some logging of data and see whats turns up.

Thanks bro, never thought about comparing odometer readings, I always concentrated on speed readings

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the hyper tech or pro comp calibrator. My tires are 285/17/70. I'm not worried about mileage because this is my weekend warrior putting less than 5k miles per year : )

A perfect example of why many people, such as myself, hate buying used cars. Especially from private sellers...have some dignity.

Meh. I would be more concerned with other things on a modded truck. Besides, if you buy a modded truck with oversize tires, you should assume the odo is off.

This is why I don't buy modded vehicles. I just assume that the person didn't do it correctly. I just flat out don't trust anyone to do things correctly anymore. It's unfortunate.

I don't think the milage will be off enough to get upset. If you had the tires on for 80,000 miles you'd get upset about it having 85,600? That's at a 7% difference in size.

If I am buying a truck claiming 80,000 miles, I'd be upset if it had 80,001 miles and the guy was straight up lying to me. If he's up-front that his truck actually has more mileage than is on the odometer, cool - although I'd probably still walk away. If he just 'fails to mention it', then that's just shitty and not having any integrity.

Vehicles don't leave my possession in anywhere near the condition a person like you looks for. They are used up and broken and I sell them with full disclosure. I had my last truck for 15 years of hard living.

I think we're missing the point here. I said nothing about condition. All I'm talking about is honesty when selling.
