@SafetyDang did a manual transmission swap into his double cab.

Pure awesomeness. If only it didn't have a 5' bed.

    I hear ya brother.
I feel your pain. 4 doors=small bed and way more money. But I have never felt comfortable with a baby seat on the jump seat of an access cab.

    Stuff and junk and things...

I took out the jump seats in my Gold 01 and a 2000 I bought to flip and drove for a while. Put the base on the floor above cubbie holes with the cup holder flipped out. It worked well and felt more stable. Granted I did not get in an accident but I now have 2 kids and they do not fit in an extra cab. I have a 2010 T4R trail that fits us all comfortably that the wife DD's but I don't want to lift it to lose MPG and then she can't fit in the parking garage. So I'll keep searching copart for a wrecked truck and make the swap eventually.

Because it was never made. They never offered a 4 door 4x4 with manual tranny in the type 1 years. And manual is what many people prefer despite the trend in the USA to make everything automatic. Think of the stupid things people post on this website, do you really feel this is not worthy? I think the guy deserves some credit for building it. I am guessing <10 people have done this mod and when reading the similar threads, all very old, i found none similar enough to bump.

I have been thinking about doing a similar conversion since 2002 but was afraid their would be a conflict with the computer systems. I hate automatic tranny but love the 4 door type 1 tacos. I appreciate that the type2s had the option of manual but they were rather large and plastic and had too many electric features for my taste.

Why is it such a big deal that a thread was created?

That's your justification for being offended by this thread? ERMAHGERD!?!!

    ;)

btw - pretty sure it's just more overreaction when you claim "you guys" are "defending its honor." Pretty sure there are some here who just really like the idea of a manual transmission in a DC. :notsure:

"And manual is what many people prefer..."

    Again, more hyperbole/straw man argument.

It's one thread, in one forum, on one website amid the vast cyber universe. It's not that important.

And no one was defending this thread's honor or claiming everyone wants a manual transmission. Despite your claims.

Don't think so. Because the internet is not as important to some as it is to others, clearly.

Many aficionados have said the combination was never made at factory. That said, dealers might have agreed to modify it after arriving from the factory.

I tried to special order a 4door with manual in 2003 and 2004, no dealer could make it happen. . Same with adding an electric dif lock on a base model. Same with ordering a taco without a bed (aka cab on chassis) in recent years. Same with other requests... (e.g. i hate carpet, hate power windows, hate chipkeys, hate power locks, hate video screens and cameras, hate timers on dome lights, etc. ) Toyota has always been reluctant to do special orders in my experience. And i typically approach numerous dealers simultaneously to remove that factor. Toyota trucks are popular so Toyota has little incentive to make special requests happen. Making options like the above or vinyl floors, hand crank windows, no power anything is common for US truck companies who seem to get the majority of industry/business and government purchases. I assume since Toyota sells um faster than they make them, this likely explains why they do not humor special orders. But that is worthy of a separate thread and if anyone wants to start such a thread they apparently have to apply for permission from Rock Lobster. ;)

Not sure where the talk of "defending the honor" of a thread came from? But as far as that truck goes i will totally toot the badassdom of that truck. If i was a young kid in Montana, with only 8k in my bank account, looking for a bad ass off-road ride to support my climbing trips and youthful shenanigans I would be lusting for that truck. But it has too many miles for me to consider now. I will continue to consider the auto to manual conversion and i was hoping to convince the guy to log onto this site and tell us what he learned from doing the mod. I am glad i did not send such a request as i feel some of the comments by other members might offend him.

    Thanks!

01-04 Double cabs never came with manual transmissions. I have talked to many dealers, master technicians, and even corporate reps. Dealers rarely do custom work unless a technician, service manager, and customer know it can be done. For example: My brothers dealership swapped a ADD Hub Tacoma to Manual hubs. The owner of the truck was a service manager and had talked to my brother and I to confirm the swap.

In my opinion the swap is only worth it for two reasons. The first reason is if you know how to do the work. The second reason is if your trucks salvaged. If anyone has questions feel free to ask me.

I think it's strange how so many are so quick to pick a fight on this site, it's like being in high school. And worst of all, it's like a cat fight, the internet equivalent of pulling hair and calling someone a bitch. Is that what makes this site go? One person comments on something they like or something they want or something they heard and then 50 people rush to whip their dicks out and say that person's idea sucks or they don't know better or the person now commenting is going to do it better? I fully believe in the idea of sharing valid information as long as it is valid and NOT misinformation, but turning every single fucking thread into a bullshit thread?? That's the issue, there is a ton of good info on this site, and i'm grateful for that, but there is entirely too much whiny bullshit one has to wade through to find good information

I feel you @Laxtoy . I don't know if I was one of those 'dick whippers' but I only chime in if I get some kind of notification (Thanks @Madjik_Man ). The only issue is that all forums are like this. So it doesn't matter where you go you will get a variation of this 'dick whipping'. I assume @Madjik_Man tagged me to correct any misconceptions about the swap since I've done both.

Na man, you provided good information, I linked a thread earlier where you said something identical to what you just said, and I figured you weren't saying it in a way leaving much room for doubt, and it confirmed what I already thought and had heard several times to be true. I do value the info on here, I have found a ton of helpful stuff, lots of creative people doing some really cool stuff. It just bugs me to no end that as soon as someone posts good info it gets buried by 25 comments that have nothing to do with the topic and become a commentary on someone's distaste for the subject matter. I guess you gotta take the good with the bad.

I would love to have the 5spd in my truck, it makes it much peppier.

Well, even with a v6, ext cab, 5 sp and 4.88's, with 34's and a bunch of armor and a rack and all sorts of gear I am far from "peppy" :p

False. Montana doesn't salt. I bought an 03 Tacoma from out there in 2010 and it didn't have a speck of rust.

True, the 3.4's are known for get up and go, they're known for lasting.
My cousin has a 2004 prerunner (Ext cab, 2.7L 4spd auto) and it is just as fast as my truck was stock, granted I have more weight from the double cab and 4x4 components, but not that much, i also have 4.11 gears vs the 3.73 (I think) that he has which should make mine faster off the line.

But the same cousin just bought a 98 4runner, 4x4, V6 (With E-locker, so I assume it's 4.11 gearing) with the 5spd and you can chirp the tires all day in it, it has a lot more pep than either one of our trucks, and the only difference is the 5 speed.
