adjusting chainsaw carb

Not sure what if this goes into general automotive section but anyways....
I am having a lot of carbon buildup in my poulan chainsaw. The carbon balls actually wedge in between the spark plug gap, causing the saw to shut off. Which adjustment do I make. There is a High and a Low screw. I bought a spline carb tool so I am ready to turn the screws. I just dont know which way or how much.

Never adjusted one before...

I think the low is for when the saw is idling, and the high for when your actually giving it some throttle. That said I'm not too sure what can cause that to happen. excess carbon in my mind means not complete combustion (lots of left over soot - dirty burn). So im guessing this is a 2 stroke (I think most are still) - maybe its a bad ratio between the oil and gas? If you wanna try anything my best uneducated guess would be to adjust the high screw to add more fuel? I'm trying to think back to my bunson burner days of high school where you could start the thing with just a little bit of fuel and get the real sooty flame, then you add more fuel and it would reduce the soot, assuming you had a good fuel/air mixture.... Like das squerall said, mark the settings now with a greese pencil or something, then play around with it a little bit of adjustment at a time.

I run Stihls for a living and I've never messed with Poulans but it sounds like you're either running rich on the carb or using too much oil in your fuel mix.

Anyway, try Arboristsite....you'll probably get all the advice you need. And more. If it's about chainsaws and wood cutting you'll find it there.

Haha right. I wont get suckered in as much. A poulan chainsaw doesnt compare to a tacoma.
