Try to get Tonneau cover installed at factory or wait for aftermarket?

I saw one at the deslership when I was having my truck serviced. I thought it looked good. Operated well. And would suit my needs. Partly because folded up it appears to be just enough room for my dog kennel.

 

I'm also debating on which cover to go with. The BakFlip products seem like my probable choice.

Does anyone on here have any experience with the Bak Industries Revolver X2? It's a hard roll up cover. But looks more secure (and maybe more waterproof?) than the BakFlip. It also allows you to open/close your tailgate independent of the cover, which would be handy.

They are, I had a snug top on my first Ranger and it was a 2 man job with at least 8 bolts to pull that thing out in a way that didn't damage the gas shocks. You could pop them off the mounting joint, but that would wear the sockets eventually rendering them useless.

 

After dealing with snap covers, hard covers, retractable covers over the years, Nothing beats my high roofline canopy for keeping stuff dry. Can still get 4 tall garbage cans stood upright in there if needed as far as headroom is concerned. Unscrew 4 c-clamps and it comes completely off. 1 person operation to remove it.

The hard cover was a pain in the ass and heavy as hell. Couldn't put anything taller than the cover/bed edge in the back,,which really sucked.

 

Toyota claims it weighs 80 lbs, but had mine off a few times too and it sure doesn't seem that elay.

 

Also, on the factory ones like came with my TRD OR, the middle seems to lay flat, but it is the ends (closest to the back window, and the end by the tailgate) that flip up a little giving it the warped look. It really not warped though.
The cover connects to the truck and locks in place with a latch that kind of looks like a door latch (Ill try to take a few pics to show what I mean). The problem is that the rod the latch snaps down on needs to be located about 1/4" lower on the truck bed so that the cover fits tighter when locked in place. I am brainstorming a way to make that happen, but because neither the latch or the rod are adjustable, I am still thinking of a way to correct.
Again, it is really not a warping issue, just the front and back need to be adjusted so they lock in place a little tighter.
Ill have ot post a correction once my little brain has time to sit down and figure out a solution.

I took photos of my bed after a big rain he had in North Texas, it rained extremely hard for about a day and a half. I had minimal water in my bed afterwards. I will put pics up later.

 

Hmmm, I'm reconsidering! The Extang Solid Fold 2.0 is available now and it installs and can be taken off really easily if I need the use of the whole bed. Probably 80% of the time the cover will be completely down, maybe more.

It also sits on top which means you do have a good inch or so more clearance height wise in the bed with the cover on.

Sorry, cheaper than the BakFlip F1 which is what my original choice was but it's not available yet!

From a friend of mine who supplies truck parts I can get the Extang for $850, but the only price in Canada that I can find for the F1 is $1450 for the 2015 model.

 

thanks for the clarification. i like the looks of the hard top extang, but at the $1000 price point i would rather hold out until the OEM is available at the dealer for the $650 price tag.

 

I'm in Canada so everything is more expensive, the OEM is $1350 up here. And they need to cut out portions of the bed liner (IIRC) to install it.

Neither of the Extang or BakFlip require cutting. The BakFlip F1 uses the existing rail system in the bed and the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 sits on top of the bed sides clamping underneath the bed lip with a clamp system.

The SF2.0 is available now, F1 maybe in December. F1 can fold up to give you access to the whole bed without removing the cover, the SF2.0 looks like it can be removed easily though. The F1 you need to lift in order to close the tailgate then drop down to seal, the SF2.0 sits on top of everything so you can close the tailgate without lifting the cover. The SF2.0 requires 2 latches to lift, the F1 a single pull lifts it - though this could mean the SF2.0 is more secure.

If I'm going to have the cover down probably 80% of the time I'm starting to think the SF2.0 may be the better option.

Yeah they are. The Velcro is allowed to move a little in the channel so it seals nice and taught. The cross members stay in the cover when you roll it up. Scroll down on the link above and read the reviews. I don't think they have one out yet for the 16' Tacoma though. Another video below.

I just received the 2016 Extang solid fold 2.0 for a 5ft bed. Part number is 83830 and etrailer.com is currently selling it (approx $800). You can find a 5% off promo code if you search on google. I was looking for an easily removable cover that wouldn't need any modifications to the bed and I wasn't concerned that it completely folded up. Haven't tested in wet weather yet so unsure of the waterproofness but overall the seals look pretty good. Only gripe is the bed rails don't go back far enough to keep the end covers attached but other than that it looks great.
