Let a friend from work borrow the truck...

the fact that this thread is 13 pages long amazes me. everyone feels the need to keep telling OP what a douche he is for starting the thread off that way. Whatever helps you sleep at night. I think everyone who read the first two pages realized that OP came across douchey and a little over the top. He even realizes that and probably wishes he could have worded himself differently. I know that EVERYONE here has been so worked up that rationalization goes out the window and we sound like complete jackasses.

OP, hope you learned from this. When you get your truck back, all will be good. Trust me. I had a 16 year old girl back into by 68 el camino parked in front of my parents house when I was over for dinner. She came to the door terrified and crying, fucking killed me to see my high school project car (my pride and joy) with the rear quarter panel pushed in. But to be 16 years old, realizing you fucked up and are now coming clean to a complete stranger about backing into his car? That took some guts. In your case, your coworker could have done the shitty thing and try and hide it, but he didn't.

I know you take pride in your cars, as do I, but you woke up breathing this morning and you are still a tacoma owner. Not a bad start to any day in my book.

Where do you live though? I always thought insurance followed the car, & I'm not sure why your friend's insurance would ever agree to pay for the damages? Anyway, I'm sure it'll get fixed as good as new.

As someone else said... no good deed goes unpunished. So lesson learned is, no more good deeds.

I don't know your age or life experience. But at some point I pray you come to a place where material possessions are not valued at such a high level.

Thank you. In my eyes, all of my possessions are valued at a high level because they are mine. They are a reflection of my hard work and what it took to achieve/acquire them. It's just the way I am and I look at it. Hope that explains it a bit. But thanks for the positive words. I'm sure the repairs will turn out well and it'll be as good as almost new.

Thanks for the positive words. You pretty much hit the nail on the head about everything. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion so people will think whatever they want. I could care less. I could have been an ass and asked to close the thread after things went crazy, but I decided to keep it open and deal with whatever was coming. Definitely learned from the entire experience, so no more good deeds for anyone, period. And no, you can't borrow my truck.

 

It looks ugly because of where it hit, which is in a super odd place in my opinion, but whatever. I live in CT, and I'm guessing because he was driving it at the time it happened, he's responsible for it so his insurance is covering it. That's just a guess since I don't really know how all of that works. But either way, it's getting fixed next week and hopefully it'll come out looking good to help all of this go away. Having to see the damage everyday doesn't really help letting it go.

His insurance company is not going to pay for that, so you better hope he has cash to pay for it out of pocket. Insurance follows the car, not the driver, and you, as the owner of the car, gave the driver explicit permission to operate. If he doesn't have cash for it all, it'd fall under your policy.

 

They are paying. He filled a claim Monday morning, I already spoke to his insurance person and got all the details worked out. I don't need to do anything further from this point on. The body shop and car rental place are already set up and the insurance company will pay them both directly so I don't see anything as far as bills/invoices, or have to worry about paying out of pocket and being reimbursed. Maybe it's different in some states, maybe it's based on the type of coverage you have... not sure how it works, but his insurance IS paying for it.

 

That's insane. I just left that industry, and was balls deep in it before I left. That's a first. Crazy.

Interesting. Now you're starting to freak me out about it. Hopefully I won't get stuck with a bill in my hand or anything like that. And yes, I have calmed down a bit by now. I was just trying to vent, nothing more, and obviously didn't "set it up" to look like that originally, which is my fault, and then things went off the deep, but whatever. To each his/hers own. Once it's fixed I'm sure it'll help.

 

Now that is the opposite of what I have always heard, which is why they say not to get rental insurance since your insurance covers the rental.

Rental cars are considered "non-owned vehicles", and are going to be explicitly explained in your insurance contract. Furthermore, while we are on it, a rental car is not the same as a u-haul. You are right, most insurance companies will cover their insured driver in a rental car, but U-Hauls and other large vehicles with large weight capacities are almost never covered under your policy. Regardless, the rental car example is not parallel to this situation, because rental cars do not have an individual owner who insures them in the manner that the OP insures his Tacoma, and the people who he chooses to let operate it.

It's all confusing. Insurance is confusing and the policies people have vary broadly state to state, but they are extremely important to understand when it comes to details like this, which is why everyone bitches about their insurance companies all the time.

 

The OP Will have to go threw his insurance, I just texted my neighbor who works for State Farm.

 

I am glad to know this now. Yet another reason to never let people borrow my truck.

If it comes down to it surely the guy who borrowed it will pay your deductible but still a claim on your insurance.
