I have a '03 Tacoma TRD with the 3.4 V6. I left work this am and usually within 5 minutes of the engine running I have heat coming from the vents when selected on controls. My drive is about 15 minutes and I never had any hot air blowing, when selected hot of cold it felt like the ambient out side air. Has anyone ran into this problem? And if so what needs replaced/repaired?
    Thanks in advance!!

You need to do some trouble-shooting.

Check the coolant level, it could be real low.
Verify that the heater valve moves when you move the heat dial from cold to hot.
Do any climate controls move 'too easily' now?

Coolant level is good. I just checked to make sure that the cable is not broken it is still attached. I did notice that the cable is connected to a module on the passenger side, when I move the control knob the cable will not move. Possibly the module is bad?

If your air diverter doesn't move air through the heater core you won't get any heat. If the heater core is plugged, no heat. If the under hood valve that should let hot water to the core isn't opening, no heat...

Since you know your not low on coolant, do both heater lines get hot when the engine is warmed up? If yes, then the problem lies somewhere in the cab. If no, underhood or heater core.

So you've got a pretty simple heater control valve. Set your control to cold, find the heater valve under the hood and note the lever position, set your control to hot, check heater valve lever position again.

    did it change?

if yes, your blend door/motor or control knob/cluster is the issue.

If not, open the center console and chase the cable from the control knob to the firewall. once the path is noted, play with the knob and see where the cable is and isn't moving.

go from there. and let us know.

Thanks for the info. I am thinking that the knob cluster is the issue, the cable is not moving at all. I did locate the other end of the cable in the cab (passenger side under the dash)and it is connected to a module. Talking to the parts dept at Toyota they are thinking it is the knob cluster. I have one ordered. I will be sure to post if this fixed the problem. Thanks for the help. My truck now has 218,000 miles and has been a great reliable vehicle, I guess some of these parts are due to be replaced at some point. I have no intentions of selling it, hope to get another 5 years of service then look for another Tacoma around the 2009-'12 year range. These trucks are great!

Also, I did check to make sure the heater core hoses were hot after the truck warmed up. Thanks for the info Indy.

I have same luke warm problem. Both heater hoses are hot. I tried to flush the heater core. Heater under hood valve is opening fully I from what I can see from cable movement. I want to see if its the blend/door motor. Any more info on this and whats the part officially called so I can look it up? Any links to buy one? Thanks

I found my problem to be related to the heater water valve control module, I attached a picture of what it looks like. It is located on the passenger side near the center of the dash. It moves the cable for the temperature control.
I found a Toyota dealer in Texas that sells parts at a much better price than I can get them locally! Call John at Toyota of Dallas. The number is 1-866-233-4305. Web site is www.toyotaofdallas.com.
Hope this helps. The part is colored in green on the diagram.

Oh, and hoses were hot on both sides of heater control valve so I called it good

So even though this thing still moves it can malfunction?

No, I think I have a different issue than orangeoutlaw. If you have control of the water valve from the cab controls then everything I listed is ruled out. It must be another problem.

How's the temp gauge? Is the needle sitting lower than normal? Does it take longer to fully warm up? Possibly a bad thermostat.

Wow, I just fixed my 5years of cold winters in the truck in two seconds. The little rod under the dash that opens and closes the blend air mix door had been kicked off its "clip" at some point and I just popped it back in place. My lukewarm nights are over. Thank you TacomaWorld! Ain't life grand?

woohoo!!! now, to stop this form happening again. does it look like it used to have a connecting rod clip like this holding it in before? its cheap plastic and could have disintegrated, allowing this to happen. you can buy them form just about any auto parts stores for cheap.

here's a neat and quick little how to if you think you can put 1 on. (from ebay of all places.. cool!)

Yup thats the one! My clip is still in good shape but thanks for the link! The Tacoma rod is straight at the end with just threads... should have a hook like those ones so it doesn't pop out.
