An intelligent post with some facts.
Yes, not investing in new technology sounds good for Toyota's profits, less so for their consumer.
Toyota does have a mostly solid reputation for quality with the exception of the Tacoma frame rust issue. Having your truck potentially collapse in the middle is serious and Toyota was slow to admit the problem.
GM did put out some crap in the seventies and eighties. But the New GM has more models at the top of JD Powers reliability study than Toyota. Plenty of Chevy trucks out there with high miles too. Next year GM likely adds an 8spd trans to the mix. They nearly caught up to Tacoma sales in September, with more plant capacity they could win the sales race. With a Ford Ranger on the way, to stay competitive, Toyota better not go cheap

Sorry, I take back my original comment. You get in trouble around here for having an unfavorable opinion about something. The Colorado is a really nice truck with adequate interior for people of all ages. I really having nothing negative to say about it.

I still don't really understand how putting a new engine, a new transmission and a new interior on a truck equates to "not investing in new technology". What else besides a diesel engine option and rear drum brakes would Toyota have had to do before the truck was considered sufficiently "new"?

Sort of. GM builds a pile of trucks in Mexico too. Flint only makes their HD lineup IIRC. I've tried to find production quota's out of each GM plant but GM hides that shit on their half tons pretty well.

All in all, I hate the whole "GM is American so buy it," argument. They don't make nearly the same percentage of their full sized truck in North America as some other companies do and they are leading the charge to continue making more and more vehicles outside the US. It's all just a stupid clusterhump.

My tenants father test drove the new twins and test drove a 2015 Tacoma...he loves his SR5 Tacoma. Said the Colorado/Cannyon didn't even compare. So how they can be better then the 2016 Tacoma is beyond me.

It's obvious the Colorado is going to outperform the Tacoma on a roadtrip because it's more car-like. I don't want a cross-over truck though. I'll take the Tacoma over the Colorado 10 times out of 10 for what I do, which is use a truck like a truck

That's what the father said. It drove like a car.

Which is great if that's what you're looking for. I can see it attracting a lot of older folk who appreciate that it drives like a car and don't want a full size truck.

I need a small truck that can take me offroad and get down tight trails and be reliable. Taco fits the bill
