School me on aftermarket wheels.

I'm looking at getting some after market wheels for my future TRD OR SB. I like the look of the wheels a bit further outside the fenders. How does the back spacing work on wheels?

 

They are a waste of money. Class dismissed.

 

The less backspacing the further they stick out.

 

Does anyone know what back spacing the factory wheels have?

 

I'm assuming 5.25" or around that.

 

Stick with OEM back spacing and offset with wheels unless you want bearing problems.

 

Negative off set wheels will cause bearing problems?

 

It's all lies. The only time your going to have bearing problems is if you went super crazy on negative offset. 2nd gens typically had 5.5 backspacing on trd sport models. Probably trd o/r was the same but I'm not positive. 4.5 backspace (BS) is typically what was recommended for 2nd gens. I think this would be the same for 3rd gens

 

Yep, all lies. Just search the term in Tacomaworld and see what comes up.

 

In fact, spent a good part of the day talking to a gentleman who works for TRD and he doesn't recommend any wheel that is not close to factory offset and back spacing for this particular reason

 

Mhmm, that's a limited number of cases. It's just like saying a lift kit is going to cause the driveline vibration. A chance is being taken whenever you mod from factory specifications. Plus those trucks look like they are used for more than mall crawling.

Yes, those are visual examples of catastrophic failure, but there are many examples of owners having to replace wheel bearings every 10 to 15 thousand miles due to offset and/or spacers. I will try to find the write up that came from a Toyota engineer explaining the physics on the bearings and post it.

Oh I wasn't saying you did. I was referring to those truck builds. In my opinion, they look like they experience some hell on the trails. There is no telling what those trucks are put through to cause damage. To say offset is the key factor, isn't true.

 

The second picture is @MonkeyProof and it was wheel studs if I remember correctly. Nothing to do with a wheel bearing.

and that is some serious backspacing what's that like a 3inch. I have 4.5 BS and 26k miles. No problems
