Hood Scoop and Gas Mileage

ALso, the location of the hood scoop is in a negative pressure area of the hood. If you were to open it up, air would flow out of it instead of into it. Next time it rains look at how the water moves on your hood. Let some water drops collect on it, then begin to accelerate. The wate droplets wont move until they are disturbed by a side wind, or until they all pool enough to slide off the hood.

 

good point. However, if the hood scoop opened up to the intake, then air would definitely be drawn in there.

Even if the scoop just opened up to the engine compartment, I think the air would still be going in there. The scoop is effectively a wall that forms a cushion of air around it. If there was an opening in the scoop, the air would have the ability to go down there, and you would probably not notice the water drops dancing around the scoop.

In short, I bet the scoop very moderately affects the fuel efficiency. Your tire pressure has more effect than the scoop.

 

Yes, but given the intake is in a negative psi. area of the hood, it may have a negative impact on the perfomance of the intake. Ideal "ram air" spot is the front of the truck, i.e. near the headlights, and grill.

Tire psi definatly has more of an impact. But I dont think the scoop affects the frontal area of the truck.

 

Well now I'm just going to have to go tape some strings to my hood.

 

That may be a better test than my water drop method.
