I would follow the intervals laid out in the owners manual. No need to do them any earlier than outlined.

My salesman informed me that Toyota Care will only be changing the oil every 10000 miles on these trucks. Rotate and inspection are every 5000.

I was wondering the same thing. I've always done the first oil change around 1500 miles on all my new vehicles for peace of mind. Also wonder if the oem filter is made from synthetic material? I would hope so with 10k mile oil change intervals. Will change mine every 5000 miles though bc I make a lot of short trips

First oil change on a new vehicle is 500 miles. One would be surprised at the amount of casting swarf that still remains inside and engine and that, along with the break in, can result in far more contaminants then most people would think.

Engines are not ''broken in'' at the factory, bedding in of the wear surfaces takes place over the first K miles of use but most of the wear is in the first 500 miles.

My 2015 Tacoma didn't have too much in the oil/filter, I was surprised at the amount of swarf in my 2014 FJC's filter though.

My instincts are telling me to do my first one at 1k and then every 5 after that. But I never know if the factory oil has something in it that should be ran with the engine so I'm thinking of doing my first oil at 3k then every 5.

Toyota says you can go 10 k every oil change and I kno people that have been following that guideline with over 200k miles so idk.

If Toyota does put something in their oil at the factory. Maybe it'll be good to run the first one at 10k then 5 after that. But like I said. Idk kno for sure.

Yeah, someone got the answer right! It's not the oil is 'worn', but all the crap from the engine and hopefully the filter caught. That is why you want to have your first oil change sooner than later. I don't care what the manual says, the manual doesn't tell me how much attention was given the engine when it was being built by some guy half asleep with the flu working a third shift and wanting to go home.

Why do people keep saying this? There is no time to break in an ingine. They build them under the "just in time process" and install them! They don't drive them around.

    I do. 500-5k-10k-15k...
    What's it hurt?
I'll probably change the diff and trans fluids early too.

That has more to do with the type of oil you use not changing intervals.
I would drop down to a 0W full-synthetic oil if you do a lot of cool engine running.

Short trips don't break down the additives in the oil faster, it just doesn't lubricate your engine because it's too cold.

    ----------------------
OP: Changing the oil early is obsessive compulsive and not logical. There is no need to assume the oil can't be changed at 10k miles. No reason. Changing it earlier is just wasteful and harmful to the environment.

Oil change interval on '16 Tacoma is 10,000 miles if not being used in harsh conditions, which (let's be honest here) most won't be. It's in your warranty and service manual.

I don't understand what the big deal is. Maybe I'm just simple minded...

An oil change before 5k miles is not covered by ToyotaCare, so you will have to pay for it or do it yourself.

If you want to change your oil at 500 miles or 1k miles or even 100 miles, then do it. It takes maybe 30 minutes and 2 beers. I don't understand why people are stressing over an oil change. And I'm not referring to this thread specifically, this isn't the first time this has been brought up in 3rd gen.

tl;dr - change your fucking oil whenever you want.

Might want to check your manual. It states break in period.

Only if you continue using the synthetic oil, otherwise it is 5,000 mile intervals.
