Diesel usually gets 20% better fuel economy than what is EPA rated, and gas 20% worse. Oil Burners hold the value better than gas models. Wouldn't be too concerned with the low HP of the diesel...torque is where it is at for trucks. The diesel will walk all over the the Tacoma when it comes to hauling and carrying a load.

And this is coming from a long time Toyota fan boyee!.

You asked: What pickup would you get if you were in my shoes???

... but never told us what shoes you are wearing.

If you are wearing Birkenstock low heals... I would recommend a very cute diesel Jetta with a sunroof.

 I am just stopping in to direct you to the Wyoming B.S. thread but if I was in your position I would be looking at another tacoma. I couldn't justify a full size truck for towing a light trailer a few times a year. If you were towing the trailer, getting bed loads of coal to heat your house, and pulling horses...then yeah, I would suggest a full size.

I drove the third gen for the first time yesterday. I'm visiting in another state that has a few on the lots. There are like none where I live so I was exited to see that they actually existed!

Test drove the DCSB TRD Off Road (white).

I thought the difference in the engine was very significant. I am very used to babying my 250 to get the most I can out of gas mileage. I rarely go over 2500-3000 RPMs and don't drive over 60mph on daily commutes. So while I already drive like an old man, I still felt the Taco had no power and it struggled. I see where you have your concerns about the feels of it towing. I tried to put my foot in it a little bit and go from about 25mph to 60mph on the highway and it shot up to around 4,000RPMs. And that was not flooring it.
My dad test drove the manual. I wasn't able to because I had surgery a couple weeks ago on my left foot so can't drive a stick till I'm out of the boot *sigh*. But even he said the manual was really low gear which surprised me.

I think you are right to try to find a way to get a trailer on this thing to test it out. I know you could do it with a Ford. They'll probably let you take a truck for the day and you can go home and hook your trailer up and see how it does. On a Taco, probably not. #1 you shouldn't tow right away on a new truck. Towing 3k lbs with a full size brand new is probably fine. On a midsize that's half the total capacity and might be too aggressive on a new truck. But at least you can see how a full-size does and compare it to your Gen 1. You may be able to ask for a test drive by yourself and quickly get it home and get the trailer on it lol.

I don't know a lot about it, but I do worry about an engines longevity when it stays in low gear. I'm not thrilled about this new engine from the perspective of someone wanting to use it as a truck for hauling and towing. As a DD only used here and there for jobs, I probably wouldn't care. It would just take some getting used to.
I'd hate driving around with a trailer running near red all the time. That would not be an enjoyable road tripping experience. Especially if crappy weather were ever encountered.

So it's silly to justify buying a full size to use once a month on long trips but totally not ridiculous to justify a diesel which costs more upfront, is more maintenance, and has more running costs??

I don't understand that logic at all.

I think they're both silly for his needs. But these people that are saying the colorado diesel is so amazing when it hasnt even been released yet seem to think it is justified to get one for his needs

You would if you were a diesel fanboy and recomended one to tow anything from a house to a dirt bike. But since you are logical, 3500 is really over thinking this and getting a truck you can live with daily is more important then one you can tow a light to medium weight occasionally.

For a midsize yes, be a good do-it-all little truck that drives like a car, be a great DD and the occasional towwer. Though I think Chevy offering the diesel on the upper packages is kinda of lame, too bad they aren't offering it in the work truck package to get the price point lower. That and not offering it in the extra cab...is even more lame...that is the single guys/or with partner no kids...off road truck dream right there. They show us the ZR2 concept but don't do it, meh fuck you Chevy!!! ;) No manual trans sucks as well. There are a lot of things I don't like about the Colorado.

At the end of the day, a Taco would be the better choice for the OP...that is if you don't pay $40K for it...if you do, think I would buy the Colorado...then it makes sense, even over a fullsize of the same price. If you're paying closer to $30K...Taco would be the 1st choice, full-size 2nd, it is a very close 2nd mind you.

At the end of the end of the day, really think the OP should keep his 1st gen, and just buy a used tow vehicle, that way you get both. Both is better than bad, it is good. :D

My wife wants us to get a camper, she says just get 2nd Tacoma, I say we need a fullsize for our 3rd vehicle, because I love my Tacoma for everything but traveling, so there is that. ;)

Yeah one would think that since the 2016 has 45 ft/lbs more torque and 88 more horsepower it should tow significantly better. Still very few tow reviews out there. I am starting to see more 2016's in the wild now so hopefully that changes soon.

As a devoted "do it yourself'er" , we always had a small truck. It was NEVER big enough though for building materials. So we ALWAYS had a 9x5 utility trailer.

Ike gauntlet towing test with the 2016 Tacoma is going to be some good comedy.

OP, get to the dealer and buy a remaining 2015 and sell your current truck for high dollar. That's my vote.

Though I personally would wait, that is a good point. It's all about the money and there may be plenty of good used ones out their with a real truck motor made for towing and staying in touch with every gas station.

Well if you towing, you are going to burn gasoline. Also If you are towing you do need torque at low end.(you not going to speed with trailer, also high revving especially in mountains its great way to overheat and bust your head gasket)
If you want to tow and burn less fuel, than you need diesel, otherwise 1GR has been great engine despite working with 3.73 gears.

There are a lot of controlled tests being done on the new diesel but none are the EPA numbers. Looks like BlueT is going to get himself a Colorado next

It was done by a respected firm that gets real mpg numbers for Motortrend. If anything, real world testing of owners mpgs will beat EPA estimates. That is usually the case for diesels. But if I just bought a new 2016 Tacoma I would try to badmouth the competition too.

You mean 2016 Tacoma.? Because new Tacoma tows and has little more payload as Fiat.
    :D
Here can your 2016 Tow 6500 lb ? what about Payload? BTW your truck has less towing capacity and payload than my 9 year old truck. Talking about burn. :D
