Yeah I put Royal Purple in both diffs, tranny and engine. It's just my choice even though it's expensive it's my money. I hear so many different opinions but that is what I chose to do

Should the 7.5 clamshell tool really be ground to work or was that manufacturing problem fixed?

    Newby here....

    I have a 2001 with a 6" lift that I just picked up.
The driver side cv axle was snapped due to the lower ball joint breaking off in the bottom of the Strut, along with the tire coming off. FROM PO...

I serviced the front end, ball joints etc. & replaced the driver Cv Axle.
I have found shavings in the front differential.

When I engage it in 4x4 the frontend will pop.

Could this just be a broken differential or does it sound like its not engaging all the way or something of the sort?

I am fairly new to Toyotas but understand the fundamentals.
I would imagine the best way to determine is to drain and pull the cover off?

I just don't want to throw in a new/used pumpkin if its something simple.

    THank you

Having enough force to break the cv while its still in the diff very well could have fucked something up.

Fine shavings/specs in the oil is normal depending on the size.

    Does 4x4 still work?

From what I've read (I bought the tool used and received it ground already), every single one has had to be ground. Maybe checking with ECGS would be best. I don't think they corrected it though.

Not sure why it would need to be unless its tight installing. The od of tool is smaller od of bushing by a bit.

Has anybody brought that to ECGS's attention or are they just ignoring it because then it'd be more work for them?

The front diff is a clam-shell design. There is no cover to pull off so no way to view the internals without dropping the clam-shell and opening it up.

It looks like it should work. Check the 2nd page of this thread, a member here (Alderleet) measured the tool and bushing and found the opposite. You can always start the job then if you get stuck, stop and grind the tool.

Not sure if this has been done. Like I said, I bought mine used and already ground. For those looking to purchase a new one (or those that have already purchased), a call/email to ECGS should get you an answer.

I don't have the problem yet (I don't think) I've popped it in 4WD like it says and nothing changes. I think I need to drop my CB first. But I'd wait till somebody sells theirs if I do. Living in an apartment sucks, no tools or storage

It doesn't sound like the same issue. Mine completely went away in 4hi. Living in a condo sucks too, I have tools and storage, but working on your car in your own garage is not permitted (I'm at least able to get away with the garage door closed for small jobs (ie, oil changes)).

    The 4x4 still does work.
It pops and will bind a little bit if you turn the wheel all the way left or right.
    Which is somewhat expected correct?

Im going to try to flush all of the fluid out and see how big of metal pieces I can get.

My thoughts are just to try and find another front differential out of a wrecked Tacoma or try to take it apart once I drop it.

Just really wanting to avoid that.

    Thanks for the Response.

Does it sound like it could be any of the bearings or something more internal?

That's why I think mine is my carrier bearing, just have to drop it with some washers or something (gotta do more research). Hopefully me and my roommates are getting a house next year so I can actually do stuff

Manage to get the tool in without grinding it but it was tight and required a few taps. Pulled the bearing out no problem.

i just noticed the same pulsing after lifting the front a couple of inches. i was thinking it was tires or alignment. i will check to see if it goes away in 4x4.

I have a loose bearing on the right side also, so I ordered the bearing and seal from east coast gear and they said the right side bearing is bigger so their tool won't work to remove it. I have the new bearing and seal for the right side, I just checked with the removal tool for the left side and the bearing is a lot bigger.
