17" TRD SEMA 4Runner Wheel, too narrow?

Being that these are 7" wide,
What are the pros and cons of wider vs narrow?

Edit: Im sure it depends on severity of off-roading/ what size tire, I am shooting for 285's at this time but would like to go to 35's at some point down the road.

 

For what size tire?

 

285/70 R17?

 

Well a 7" width wheel vs a 8" will give you more side wall bulge on the tire. This will help protect the wheel lip from damage which is a PRO. A 285 should look perfect.

You can check wheel size specs with tire manufacturers. I had to fight discount tire a bit to get them to mount 295/75 16s on my 7" wide wheels. If you are planning on running 35s, get a wider wheel. That being said, narrow wheels have some advantages if you can run them.

 

I think I will just stick with 265/70/17 with hopes of not having to trim anything

 

I'm currently running these wheels with 265/70/17's and have no issues at all. Love these wheels!

Different tire manufacturers will recommend different maximums based on their design constraints. Further, a narrow rim will really only limit width not height. You could probably run a 38 x 11.0 TSL bogger on these rims if you had the clearance. ( post pics if you do that)

FWIW I have these rims and I run 265/70R17 and I think they are great. If i ever regear I would go up to the 34x10.50 or equivalent.

ETA: I do have very minor rubbing on the mud flap; these trucks seem to be hit or miss with rubbing. When I have mine realigned I am going to try and get them to maximize clearance.

Thanks! I love the way it turned out! It feels like a truck now...nice firm ride, not harsh but firm. I've got Bilstien 6112s up front set to the max 2.5 inch (I actually got almost 2.75 out of it) Bilstien 5160s out back with 1.5 inch Deaver AAL. After this pic was taken I added Firestone Ride Rite air bags for max load capabilities with out the famous Taco sag.

 

You sound like a candidate for 255/80/17s. That'd sit just right on a 7" wide rim and you get all the height you need. Only problem then is lack of selection of tires.

 

That's cool. Never heard of Billies 5160's before but I will look into them. I will also be looking into air bags or leaf helper since I tow a 5k lb enclosed v nose trailer on occasions and hate the bro lean effect

Where did you get your tires and suspension from?

 

Got my suspension from Headstrong Off-road. Small mom/pop shop with great prices and fast shipping. Got my tires from Discount Tire's ebay store. They had a coupon for $100 off a purchase of $400 or more. Broke my purchase up into 2 tires each and saved $200!

I got the airbags because we have a camper on order that will be here in about 2 weeks. Tongue weight is 240lbs. I put 10 lbs of air in them and stood on the receiver hitch (I'm about 260 lbs) and it only dropped about 3/4 inch. You can jack the bags up to 100lbs max I believe, but I can't imagine ever needing to do that.

BTW if you are going with 265/70 17s take at look at the KO2s, they come in C load rating which makes for a lighter tire and won't effect braking, acceleration and ride/comfort as much as E load rated tires. C load rating should handle most of our towing needs.
