What is making this squeaking sound?

Hey guys, I have a 2000 Tacoma and just recently it started squeaking. It's very noticeable when I begin to reverse and it makes a squeak, squeak, squeak sound..kind of in sync with the wheels turning. I thought it may be the u-joints, so I greased them up real good and the squeak is still there. It sounds like it is mainly coming from the rear. What could it be? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated..thanks!

 

Might be your pads, The wear tab on the inboard pad is made to squeak once your pads are worn, you'll notice is when your on the brakes, and in reverse.
From the rear it could be somthing simple,,, rust flakes in the drum? take your drum off and check your secondary shoe (front one) and make sure there is nothing wedged in there, or rust flakes, or maybe even a chip in the shoe.

i had that exact prob.. u joints!

 

u-joints or center support bearing or both

 

So the noise is definitely not coming from the rear brakes. The squeak sounds like it is coming from where the drive shaft connects to the rear axle..somewhere in there. I greased up the u-joint. Why would it only squeak in reverse?

 

my 2001 was doing the same thing. I lubed all the zerk fittings and it was still doing it. I greased them some MORE and it has now been gone for almost a month.
I used 2 tubes of grease, they were very dry!!

 

I have greased all the fittings..the squeak is still there..IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!

 

Chech for play in the u joints? What about the rear pinion seal, give that a check, have you be having a slow leak of rear end oil at all?

 

well if u checked all the u-joints its 99.9% gonna be center support bearing mine started to squeak in reverse so i changed it now no more squeak

 

Mine just started doing the same thing. Went through and greased everything, still doing it. Dosen't squeak when in neutral rolling backwards. Thinking maybe u-joint. Anybody else figure this out?

My 98 prerunner has just started squeaking (sounds kind of like a bird chirp) and it's driving me insane! Sounds like it's coming somewhere from rear right side of truck. It's not constant, usually when I'm around 20-30mph and coasting (subsides when I accelerate or brake). Guess I'll start checking bolts and lubing everything and hope that works. Can't stand the squeak!

 

Major bump... I have noticed this. Are there any for sure results? Mine does it when in first gear as well.

 

Most of the time it is a bad u joint. Possibly the carrier bearing (spray some penatrating lube into both sides. This usually stops the squeaking for a bit).
