I have a 2012 DCLB that has never been off road and the left front bearing was replaced at 50,000 miles (82,000 kms.). The Toyota dealer replaced it under warranty this past summer. Now I think the right front is going.

I took mine into the local dealership, they charged me over $700 to replace just the passenger side bearing. I got screwed big time. I will have to find somewhere else if the drivers side goes. I did get a free air freshener out of the deal. :)

Go ahead and change both sides because the other wheel is not too far behind. It's cheaper to remove the hub yourself , order the parts online, take the new parts and the hub to an automotive machine shop and they press them in for ya , cheap like $30 buck per wheel. Mine went out at around 90k miles.

There is nothing wrong with the design, it's where Toyota is sourcing the bearings from. If you look at bearing boxes these days, they source them from almost anywhere. As an example, you might pay more for a FAG bearing which is German but stock with the same p/n will have one from Brazil, one from Germany, one from Japan etc. Toyota is at the mercy of the bearing companies on this one. That being said, if they request by lot etc that can help with the quality.

Are wheel bearings covered by the powertrain warranty?

How do you know if your bearing is bad? I'm at 165k with original bearings.

I started hearing a howling/growling noise from the front end at speeds on the highway, then it got louder and would even do it at 30 mph. I was really noticeable if you got up to like 60 and let off the gas and you could hear it really good. Started to be annoying after a while, I did have some slight vibration in the truck as well. The mechanic listened to it and right away said front wheel bearing, then they put it on the rack and checked both wheels by turning them by hand and they could hear it well. I'm going to check around at a small shop to do the other side. I needed this one fixed quickly since I was going somewhere, I try not to do things this involved, I change the oil, diff, air filters and spark plugs, but that is about is far as I am comfortable with. I'm a computer geek, so I would rather pay to have it done, but $700 per side is way too much to do again. I think they were trying to get me to trade it in. I did call another Toyota shop and they said about $600, so not sure why they want so much when I found a bearing is around $80 to $100.

    Question about your dealership experience..

Do you have a lift on the truck? Any suspension mods? If so, I can see them blaming that as the reason for bearing failure. I've been pretty lucky so far, but from the sound of things, I may be needing bearings soon.

I jumped under my truck the other day to do visual inspection. Noticed that lower ball joint on passenger side was damaged. Also noticed grease coming out of my drive axle on the same side. Truck has 58k miles. 2012 double cab long bed. Am going to a 6" lift this week so will be replacing upper control arms with uniball style, but the lower one bugs me now!

I'm running a 3" lift now with 33" tires and my wheels are backspaced just enough to clear everything. I'm not flared out like crazy.

Anyone else have othe problems like this?

I have a 3" spacer lift up front and stock tires with no spacers on the wheels. The Toyota dealer told me up front that Toyota would not warranty wheel bearings on a lifted truck but he said the paperwork he had to send them wasn't worth the hassle so he agreed to change the bearing under warranty. I presume that all you guys who lift their trucks after purchase understand that their warranty on driveline components goes away immediately.

I wonder about the dealer lifted trucks. When I bought mine, I lifted it the same way the dealer was lifting the tacomas. I know the service manager at my dealership pretty well, and he told me it wouldn't be a problem to claim warranty as long as it was the same thing they did to the trucks.

That makes sense to me, but now that I'm going to a 6" lift, things are going to change.

Anyone purchase a lifted truck from the lot? (Although my dealer in town charges $11,000 for lift package!!) so makes sense why most of us lift them ourselves!

visual is one way to tell if a part is bad or about to go bad but not all conclusive. I believe you need to lift the truck and do the pull/push test to see how much play is in the lower ball joint. If the rubber seals are torn than water could get in there and then it'll eventually go bad on you.

I think the cost of one wheel bearing and all the assemble pieces is closer to $175. That's not including labor. Try a local Midas or small garage. Stay away from the stealerships unless absolutely necessary. I found a great local mechanic several years ago (who happens to be right across the street from the Toyota dealership). Between my wife's car and my truck, we give him plenty of business and found it always to be 40-60% less than what Toyota quotes us. Good luck with your other bearing.
