Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I had something similar happen to me. The front driver side dash speaker mount had a vibration issue. When I pulled it off to look for loose bits of anything, I snapped one of the friction tabs. I was very sad. But it went back in just fine. One tab won't affect something that gravity is holding down anyways. But the tab must've been the issue because the vibration noise went away.

Break in period probably more for Ring & Pinion gears (rear end) than the engine.

Maybe there is something to the trucks driving better with more mileage, or breaking in. It is interesting that MPG would change. I always assumed it would be us getting used to the trucks. I know I've had some jobs where I've driven beater pickups and tractors that I was literally afraid of at first, but by the end of those summer jobs I was pretty comfortable with them. Machine taming me, not the other way around I think.

I'm around 650 miles and not noticing much difference yet.

Currently at 912, but I think it's enough to provide a solid opinion.

Gas mileage and power have definitely improved, but I feel for different reason. I think it's mainly to do with getting used to the truck and learning it's characteristics and sweet spots. In the city I drive with ECT on. Plenty 'o power there. Any highway or freeway mileage and ECT is off. I think most goes with any brand new car you purchase. Each car/truck is different and have their own shifting and power characteristics. Other than that, (knock on wood) everything has been damn near flawless and couldn't be more happy with this purchase. Every time you get in this truck you get that natural dopamine high because it's so fun to drive.

I've had a car or two I've purchased brand new off the lot and had the worse buyers remorse. Couldn't wait to trade it ('05 Exploder Sport) and get it off my hands ASAP. This truck we'll be keeping till the wheels fall off and longer.

    What do you hear?

That is not something I would expect (or noticed). The only thing that is changing is the valve timing. It is just like other Toyota vvt (just over a wider range); so, the only difference should be that air is flowing back which should sound the same as air going forward.

Not true... according to manual 500 miles is engine break in. Factory runs engine to see if it fails, drives truck off assembly line. No way 11 miles (what was on mine) breaks in the engine.

So you mean my truck wasn't broken in when I drove it off the lot with 4 miles on the odometer? Oh dear! And to think I could of avoided all this by reading the manual! o_O

I've got mine up to about 1500 miles and I'd agree with most stuff. MPG has gone up just a bit since the beginning, but I just put slightly bigger tires on, so that will get dropped back down. Power has been great, I do hear and feel a difference between otto and atkinson, somewhere around 3000 rpm I think. Even though crawl is sort of a gimmick, it is really nice to have for those long bumpy sections, or steep hills to keep a constant speed. I've been up and down over 30 degree inclines, maxed out the pitch readout, it's terrifying but handles it great. Crawl was cool in sand too, I was trying to go up a decent incline in slightly wet sand and crawl just kept inching along where 4 low stopped. MTS modes really do help in situations, especially the loose rock and moguls options. The truck feels solid all around especially when off road.

I just want to say that from your experience off road it sounds like crawl is not so much a "gimmick" but rather a help. :p

You have the EnTune app installed? If so, may want to try to uninstall and reinstall.

HAHA. So I'm a little over 1100 miles now. Right after I filled up with the 4th tank of gas, I have gone from 20.3 mpg (this was consistent for the previous three tanks) to 21.4 so far for this tank. Driving same paths basically. Maybe getting lucky some and hitting less lights. Right after filling up was averaging 22+ for city driving. Then started driving a little harder and less little old lady-like since the mpgs increased.

I don't think it's a breaking in thing, it could be the gas though. I filled up at a place I've never gassed up at before. Will test that theory on the next tank. Never really tracked this stuff before, but my truck seems to like the new gas it has...
