05+ Official Perforated/Rusted Through Frames

cleaned off the flaking metal but no holes, still feels solid.
driver side is fine, does not show any signs of rust or rot.

 

Hit that shit with a hammer and punch, looks like it would go through. That's what Toyota does. Get your frame ordered as early as you can, get more wheeling in. Mine was in way better shape than that and they managed to punch a hole

I'll get a hole through there no problem. I was hoping it was thin enough that a screw driver would poke through.

I'll hit it with an air chisel tomorrow

should I remove the relentless ifs skid and rock sliders for the inspection?

 

I did not remove my IFS skid, but other skids I would take off (if I had them) and Bolt-On sliders so they can get at the frame easier. Weld-ons I would not worry about.

truck is messy under there and I don't mean dirt. only clean spots are where the grease flung out of the u joints

 

Did this thread ever determine a common thread and point us as to why they all rust by cat?
I went to my dealer the other day there were 25 bad frames piled up
All had holes by cat (BAD HOLES)
! I noticed when inspecting my 2015 that this area of the frame had little triangle crimps/small triangle scuffs in paint, is this were a clamp held them while dipping , is this related to the problem area? Anyway best of luck to all with this BS .

 

Got my truck back last week - stealership had it for a week (5 full work days) - they did a good job in my opinion. I got to talk to the mechanic doing the frame swap twice while he had the truck. He is the stealership's chief mechanic and the only one who does the frame swaps. I had posted earlier that the stealership wouldn't allow me to bring in my own rear shocks and have them put them on; when I had a chance to talk to the mechanic, he said he didn't mind ("it's only 2 more bolts to remove") and told me to bring them in and he would swap them out at no xtra charge - brought him 2 new KYB shocks and he put them on for me. Overall, I'm happy with the work. My frame swap was done at the Toyota Dealer in Milford, DE

Simple answer would be heat. Any chemical reaction is acelerated by heat including rust.
Dip some steel wool in cold water, then dip some in boiling water and watch the result

if i am not mistaken a major rust hole always develops on both sides of frame , people reference cat area because its an easy locator.
i am not 100% on that though?

 

my v6 has a cat on both sides...
maybes its the cat piss thats eating through the frames

Hello all, first post under new e-mail so hope it's OK to open up this thread. Went in for my frame inspection today. I had looked at frame on a lift last fall and didn't think I had any obvious signs of rust-through. I was patting myself on my back about how well I had taken care of the under-carriage with a local car wash I had found that sprays off the undercarriage and even, yes, even doubted others on this forum who's frame was rotted due to not taking care of your baby. My apologies to all for doubting. My frame needs replaced. I can drive it until the new frame comes in, no obvious buckling or danger signs that make it un-driveable so sometime this summer... I'm pleasantly OK with that. They told me no charge and rental included while they have it. They'll do the struts at parts cost and replace all lines as well as springs at n/c. As unpleasant as this whole thing is in the end I would give a lot of credit to Toyota for stepping up and handling this. The cost to them is past the value of many of the trucks being done here but I want my little baby back not what I could find and buy for the price of some buy-out program. Thanx all here for making me a smart consumer on this. Will update when all work is done.

Ask lots of questions. Demand to be kept in the loop during the whole process. Make sure your truck isn't the first frame replacement that the technician has ever done. I am speaking from experience. I lost any trust I had in my local dealership during my frame replacement. Stay on top of them, they aren't in this to satisfy YOU. They are only doing this because Toyota made the decision to replace them.

 

Has anyone ever measured the new frames versus the original? I cannot get the tires to stop rubbing. 5 alignments. 4 from the dealer, one just today from my preferred shop. Even with me providing instructions and uca details. my tires are pretty worn too, new ones will rub even more. I was told to ask Toyota for the datum points on the original frames versus the replacements to compare.

 

How about just put wheel spacers on and call it good? You already know it rubs, do the dimensions really matter? You have a brand new frame.
