It was a few thousand more then the DCLB OR 4x4 with the JBL Premium package. I really liked my Tacoma and may get another one some day but I'm overly impressed with build quality and ride! I can't wait to add a few things to the 4Runner but so far so good!

I have zero experience with a 3rd generation Tacoma. That said I own a 2011 TRD Sport Tacoma and a 2015 4runner SR5 premium. I love my Tacoma but the 4runner is a higher quality vehicle in my opinion.

Am I the only that thinks it's crazy that the two are the same price? Hell, I'm actually pretty sure you can get the Trail Premium for less. Assuming you get the Taco with Prem/tech and JBL (damn near $40k), which is what I'd do.

My decision on TEP vs TRD was easy. I couldn't get a sunroof or KSDD with the TRD so I got the TEP and love it! Other than a few appearance things the TEP seems like a better truck as a starting point.

Also I don't wear flat brimmed hats so couldn't pull off the TRD.

The 4Runner crowd is brutal. Lord help us if a Gen3 TRD Pro is released. Shits really going to hit the fan then.

That's a tough one too because the Pro rims are so much better. Plus, the Pro doesn't have that silver front and rear bumper trim.
Pretty much the reason why I'm leaning towards waiting for next Fall, and the 2017s.

TEP can be had for 37k. Plus PRO wheels for about $180 a piece. Throw the TRDP suspension on with the KDSS and you got a nice vehicle. Im waiting for the 2017 to come out, least it would do is drop the prices of the 16's

But I bet that Bilstein remote reservoir Pro suspension ain't cheap. Advantage being you'd have KDSS.

It's (TRD Pro) still a Tacoma and next to a 4 Runner, it's made out of paper mache. They are different vehicles. One is made kids, the other adults.
All the compromises that Taco fanboy's don't like about the 2016 Taco, aren't there on the 4Runner. Better seating, elevation adjustment, full box frame , 4 wheel discs.....better rear seating, 4 0 L motor etc. when the 4 Runner comes with the 4.6 v8 like it's bro the GX 460, the shit will really hit the fan.

So has anyone actually decided the 2016 Tacoma over the 4R?

Hi there guys. I'm faced with a similar situation here. I had an 07 DCLB TRD Sport for 5 years. I traded that in for what was then a 3-yr old 08 BMW 335xi. I'm trading this car in after 4.5 years.

My first choice is to get a 2016 DCSB TRD Off-road. The exterior upgrades are very appealing to me. The interior is unbelievably hi-tech. I thought I was sold on it. However, when I started driving it last night, right away I felt the lack of power and the constant hunting of the transmission at around 40 mph going up a slight incline(maybe 10-15 degrees, but I don't really know).

I went back in today to test drive both the 4Runner and the Taco again, but this time with the Taco's ECT power button engaged. The 4Runner felt familiar right away, very close to my 07. That was a good thing. I felt I was driving my truck again, but it just got a little more refined.

I've also wanted the 4Runner for the longest time because of it's styling andcreature comforts, but I didn't want to afford the price difference from the Taco, and I like the truck bed for it's convenience even though I do have a 6x10 enclosed trailer.

So I have a choice to make between the 2016 DCSB TRD OR or the 2016 4R Trail Premium. Either vehicle will be driven 60 miles/day , 4 times a week. It's going to haul my motorcycle+trailer weight of 2200 lbs, around 11 times a year. We have 2 family camping trips/yr, 1 pheasant hunting trip a yr, and a 2500 -mile roadtrip once/yr.

I think typing these things down is helping me think. If you guys have any comments, I'd appreciate it. Sorry to revive an old thread. If you think I should start my own, please let me know.

    It's not that bad;

    http://trdparts4u.toyotaofdallas.com/Scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=-10388

Especially considering you'll pay about $10K more for the TRD Pro.

We have both, I have a '14 4Runner and the wife has the '16 TRD Sport, even though I drive the Tacoma more often. I love both of them but they are completely different vehicles. The 4Runner is well more defined and I think you get a lot more for your money but that all depends what you need it for.

It comes down to do you want a bed or not. I didn't want a bed, so I bought a 2016 4Runner TE Premium. For your usage (hunting and such), the Taco may be a better call. I wanted the cargo room inside and that sweet roll down back glass.

Yeah, at this point, it seems the transmission on the Taco would be hard me to get used to. I was really disappointed. The ECT seems to be on the opposite end, with it being rough and aggressive. The manual tranny Taco might be another option, if I can find one, but the 2nd Gen MT had issues.

Maybe I just get the 4R now and in 4 years give it to the wife. By then, the Taco's drivetrain, I'm hoping, would be more refined.

I actually need a truck to haul crap around.

But I would suspend that in a second to buy a 4runner TRD Pro. If the damn thing came in a manual.
