Bad oil change

A more untrue statement has yet to be made on TW. Smoke merely means oil was heated close to flash point and that happens when the oil comes out of the loose filter and sprays on the manifolds. Under law you can not sue for potential damage, only actual damage. It would be the responsibility of the OP to pay to have the entire engine torn down to the block and inspected. It would then be determined if the wear matches the mileage. If its determined the wear does not exceed mileage the OP just lost 2 grand for that inspection. Hardly worth it for the highly unlikely cance that damage was done since emptying the oil pan through the oil filter would take a long time.
