Was there twice and was told it was normal to have piston slap in a new 4.0 engine. Characteristic of the design. The dealership will not attempt a repair with out Toyota instructing them to move forward with it.

Did you try a different dealership that isn't aware of your issue?

The main thing is you find an honest dealership that's willing to work with you. For example, I don't know where you're located, but where I'm at there is Bobby Rahal that has many dealerships (Toyota, Lexus, Honda, etc.) and they have great customer service. They'll work with you to make sure its corrected.

We once bought an accord from a different dealership and the car had multiple issues. They took it in and corrected every complaint we had and got their money back from the other dealership.

The same Bobby Rahal that owns the indy car team with David Letterman.

That's terrible. You spent a ton of money on truck probably in part on Toyota's quality reputation. That's how they treat you? Who wants a brand new truck that sounds like a diesel, when it's not? File a lemon law claim, dump it, and get something else.

This. Has to be a recurring problem when a fix has been attempted.

That's why they wont attempt a repair. a lot of people were able to get there's repurchased after three failed attempts. So if they keep saying its normal they hope you will give up.

I dont know where the OP is from, but all dealers in my area charge you for "diagnoses" IF they dont find a problem while under warranty (which, if there isnt a CEL, they usually say there is nothing wrong). They all charge between $100-$120 per hour, and charge at least one hour to scan your vehicle for codes. Has been like this with my Toyota, Honda, and VW. I am always amazed when you guys post experiences with dealerships spending time to find an issue and not charging for it.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
Man, that brings back memories. That's the noise that allowed me to lemon my 2013. New idler pulleys, new front cover with oil pump, and then a short block later, they gave me a '14. I think that I was one of the original complainers is why I got a new truck, now they say it's normal.

I have been told that they had a bad run of oil pumps, I can't substantiate that, but if you have your dealer check it with a stethoscope, you will find that the noise is coming from the front drivers side bottom of the engine.

Dodge, on their Neon was replacing engines under warranty for a while, due to piston slap. They ended up reneged, then changing to saying it was "normal." It happens and OEM's are aware.

I don't use the dealer often considering my truck is out of warranty. Posting on a forum about a new vehicle's problem just doesn't seem beneficial to me, unless the dealer isn't providing help. Scan tools aren't that expensive if the dealer is wanting to charge for that. Whenever I had my coolant flush, they were willing to answer my questions and even offered a complimentary inspection. I would speak to supervisors if they wouldn't check out my new vehicles issue without wanting to charge me. You have to demand these things sometimes.

Were you able to find out what the engine noise was caused by? and how is the 14? My 15 has a loud piston slap noise till it reaches operating temp. And protocol at the dealership is piston slap is characteristic of the toyopta 4.0 motor.? I have owned a couple of tacomas and 4runners with the 4.0 no cold start knocks or piston slap.
I guess if they say its normal they figure most people will except that. And they wont make any attempt to repair it in order to keep away from the three repair attempts needed to lemon it out.

Outrageous. You hand over 40K plus to Toyota; Your friend with the Canyon riding shotgun, start it up. WTF! Maybe it doesn't blow, but Toyota needs to clean up their mess.

I have a 2011 with 120k Miles. It just this winter started with a sound like that. Not that audible in fact it’s easier heard from the cab. Once warm it’s just the normal Tacoma ticking sound that comes with all of them. I would like to nip this now. Should i get thicker oil, have something fixed it just let it be?
