That is a good point, but it is not really my question. The two models I am comparing are exactly the same MSRP and Invoice - only difference is OR or Sport.

So I totally just figured it out. It is 1.35% of base Msrp.

I went and checked TDA on 3 different priced vehicles and divided the amount of base Msrp and they all came up the same percentage.

Either way the point of all this is, it's a legitimate cost I believe and not unreasonable.

That's just for the Phoenix area I'm guessing. Good to know that it comes down to a percentage - that alone answers my questions!

Yes I am sure it is region specific.

Yeah, I don't question the legitimacy of it, I'm just trying to figure out why the dealership can't give me an exact price yet. Maybe it would be better to buy somewhere where recreational marijuana is not legal...

Edit: Maybe this will work out in my favor - I'll bring snacks when I go to sign the paperwork. :D

I agreed to pay a 719 tda on my order. Truecar also lists tda and it was the exact price my dealer charged.

Even if they were the exact same price?

yes, I priced out a limited, a trd OR and a TRD OR with the premium package. The limited was close to 900. The one I ordered was TRD OR premium and tech package. The fee was $500.
I was asking a million questions too. Toyota should not charge me, an employee advertising fee. That's BS! He explained that it was added on and minused out with my discount and dealer hold backs. IDK.
The first dealer I went to couldnt even tell me what TDA was. Just a mystery fee I had to pay. I didnt buy from there.

I tend to buy from locations that are not in my area (Hawaii) because of the regional markup and prices above MSRP. When I buy a vehicle out of market, I explain to the dealer that the TDA is a fee for the advertising that local residents enjoy and are able to take advantage of the resource. Because they do not advertise in my area I do not expect to pay the fee, as I am not able to take advantage of the resource.

Im sure I should have argued more to not pay the TDA price. However, I have spend so much time working with my dealer to find the truck I wanted that I just gave up on arguing.
Even with paying I am happy with the price I got on a DCSB TRDOR M/T in Quicksand. $32,400 (33,884 MSRP 31,398 invoice) did not seem out of line. The same truck in a 2015 was about 31,200 at the same dealer so an additional 1,200 for a 16 seemed reasonable. Who knows. Maybe I got screwed at that price.

Any insight would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks again.

Not sure why Toyota (car dealerships) want a separate line item for advertising. Is not advertising the cost of doing business?
Using Toyota logic then buying a cheeseburger should have a advertising fee added to the price of the burger. What other products do consumers buy that have a separate advertising fee as a line item?

Might as well add a line item for the utility bills dealerships get each month.:D

Please excuse my ignorance but what is dealer mop & glow? I assume it is a paint protectant finish that is of dubious value?

And if a buyer doesn't want it, the dealer simply doesn't perform the service?

    TIA

I'm pretty sure nearly everything has an advertising fee built in, but its done on the front end and passed along to us without us even "knowing". When Samsung (for instance) makes a product, they likely include whatever costs/fees they like prior to listing the price. We never see that because there is no invoice to request and dissect. I'm sure the same applies to McDonald's, etc.
