Tacoma tonneau

Does anybody else have an issue with Toyota Tacoma OEM tonneau? My stuff was all wet after the first heavy rain. I went to the dealer and they tried to persuade me that the tonneau was not closed/latched properly. After He did it the "right way" I asked him to run it through the car wash. The result was the same - the bed was covered in water (not severely, but enough to prove that tonneau is not water proof). Now, they are telling me that they will the "mature technician" look into it and, probably, order a replacement... LOL!!! Why??!! So I could have the same issues? It is a designer's mistake to make the cover shorter than it's supposed to be. Plus, if you open the tail gate you can see holes between tonneau and the bed. Well... I have to give these guys a chance to fix it - don't loose anything. The worst case scenario I will get re-imbursed full price or they will provide me with an aftermarket hard top tonneau.

 

Is it advertised as a water proof cover? I was under the impression they were openly NOT waterproof?

 

Nope, not waterproof. You are correct. Under the cover section in the manual it states:

"Deck area is not waterproof, so take care when transporting items which may be damaged by water."

If you have the cleats installed, you need to make sure they don't get in the way. We had to adjust ours. When you close the sections, you need to make sure they have clicked in. Might have to say lift up the middle one and make sure it's locked in, before closing the last one.

Make sure that bolt near the front right side of the cab is tight also.

 

did your cover come installed from factory?

 

Toyota also has a TSB concerning the rubber gasket that goes in between the folds of the cover. Might check with your dealer for it.

 

Cover is not waterproof, was it ever??

 

My bed was wet after driving in the rain also. However, I have another issue. The latches on the last fold of the tailgate need some work. The passenger side latch is so tight that I have to slap the cover over the latch to get it engaged and the driver side is too loose and has a gap when closed. Does anyone know if these are adjustable?

 

Most aftermarket company's tell you try fold covers are not 100% waterproof. Yes some are better then other but I don't think toyota has the experience manufacturing covers like the aftermarket does. Good luck

 

I had a few issues with my cover and the latches on the opposite side from the lever (passenger side). The issue I was having is the protective cover on the latch was getting in the way when trying to latch the top when closing. I had to trim some plastic off the protective cover on the latch so there's better clearance.

 

The Toyota over on my truck as given me good service so fare. It has rained here in Alabama for the last 2 weekends in a row. I haven't had any water get in the bed. I drove it down the highway last week in the pouring rain. This weekend its been park all day in the rain and the bed is still dry.

 

I mentioned this in another post but I found out that the bed cleats were in the way pushing the cover up just enough to let water in. Once you move the cleats back two slots it allows the cover to rest all the way on the tailgate. I haven't had any problems with water getting in since!

 

can you share some details on that?

Mine also leaks (had a lot of rain in houston lately) but just by looking at the design, it looks like it isn't intended to be 100% leak proof

 

I can have my buddy check on it tomorrow. It was something to do with the gaskets lifting out of place. Just useless information my buddy gave me since I am still waiting for my ORDCSB with the tonneau

 

I'll be checking the cleats first thing upon delivery of my truck with the cover. Very good advice, thank you.

 

I have noticed that one of my strips comes up a little after opening the back. I have to push it back in. I'll be interested in what your buddy says.

 

No water leaks from recent torrential rain or car washes.

Anyone have a TSB number or copy of the TSB mentioned in the earlier post?
