I didn't get beat as a kid but my father was a big guy and if I did wrong he let me know I did wrong. anytime I was about to do something stupid or illegal I would always think about my dad and what would happen and would end up not doing it. I think that is why I didn't get in a lot of trouble as a kid.

Yup. Dad a saying - "when you can kick my ass you can make the rules." By the time I was old enough (and bigger than him) I didn't want to any more. Mission accomplished, Pop.

Which is why there is a fine line between discipline and abuse. If you were "beat" as a child, then I can understand the lack of respect.

This is gonna piss off the spankers. But I'm a firm believer that spanking is only a result of the parent losing their cool. It does nothing for the kid. Say all the "I got spanked as a kid and I'm fine" as much as you want. It doesn't change anything.

There's times I want to throw my 3yo across the room. He tests me to the limits. But I realize that rearing my hand up and hitting his ass would only be for my satisfaction. My own frustration. And doing nothing for him. My kids are good. 10yo 3yo and 7 months. All boys. And unless they decide to fight me in their teens. I don't ever plan on laying a hand on them.

I was spanked as a kid. My mom still proudly talks about breaking a wooden spoon over my ass. It did zero for me. If anything it pissed me off.

If you don't set that consequence line someone else will. When I was in the Army, teenagers would join who never had a hand laid on them their entire lives. They didn't know where that line was, and as grown ass men would push people to their breaking point with the assumption nothing would happen to them. That was not the case. Once you get your forward assist tapped a couple times, you learn not to fuck with people. It would have been much nicer if it was their own parent that taught them that lesson, not some grumpy Sergeant who had zero qualms about choking them out in front of their peers. Please, for the good of future generations, draw that line in the sand and enforce it with with a respectful, loving swat only a parent knows. The alternative is that someone much less comforting will do so.

 You don't need to spank or hit a kid to set boundaries. I'm sure those guys had zero discipline. Not just that they weren't spanked as a kid.

The one spanking I remember happened when I was 6. My dad made me wait a whole week for it. I remember the wait more than the spanking, and if anything it was a letdown. That feeling, though, it stayed.

I didn't buck up again until 16, and mom put an end to that one. Turns out mom hit harder.

Kids, don't say "fuck off" to your mamas. Don't do it.

I wasn't beat but was disciplined as a kid with a belt or hand. I learned respect and mannors from my parents but not always through discipline. I will say it kept me in line knowing there were consiquenses inside the house as well, not just "time out" BS.

WASHINGTON (MEDIA GENERAL) — An investigation found the Department of Defense cannot explain why a natural gas station in Sheberghan, Afghanistan, cost U.S. tax payers $43 million to build.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction — or SIGAR — released a report showing a special task force created to stabilize post-invasion Afghanistan wanted to build the gas station to show commercial viability for compressed natural gas stations.

“One of the most troubling aspects of this project is that the Department of Defense claims that it is unable to provide an explanation for the high cost of the project,” said John Sopko, Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction in a letter to the Secretary of Defense.

A similar project in Pakistan only cost $500,000 to build, according to the report.

According to Sopko, representatives of the Department of Defense did not deny the special inspector’s findings. Instead, they said no one can answer Sopko’s questions because the special task force that started the project closed in March 2015.

I've had guys that have tested my limits on the boat; and I never really demonstrated exactly where that figurative "Line in the Sand" was until a few weeks ago...

I agree. Certain guys, whether they're 18 or 55 will continually test the boundaries of what's acceptable when there is a clear leader/crew situation. Sure, there is room for constructive comments and positive contribution on my boat - I'm not right 100% of the time. But when mouths are opened just to make some idiotic comment - I get a little flustered. Aside from spankings I was never hit as a child; although I think there was the one time when I was issued a swift backhand from my mother when I spouted off some incredibly disrespectful comment.

That was one of the most memorable things from High School - seeing how entirely disrespectful some of my classmates were to the teachers.

Case in point a few trips ago. I'd been up for about 24 hours - fishing in an area where I'd never been before... Storm was on the way in and I was trying to find the fish. One of the guys who is nearly twice my age misinterprets what I'm telling him to do; leaves a 10 pound safety hook off one of our booms swinging around in shit weather... it's swinging by his head and he repeatedly fails to secure it to it's strap, yet has time to yell at me that "If you hurt me, motherfucker - I'm going to hurt you!". I observed. Remained silent. Waited until our gear was set, and proceeded to yell like I've never yelled before. Emotion to the point at which I was shaking from how flustered I was. Essentially I informed him the next time he had threats, he better come at me - and if he chose not to - than he could shut the f up and continue about his job. I must say that it took a lot of physical restraint not to lash out and act on what I really wanted to do. But, that wouldn't have solved anything or been constructive in any way.

It's a simple rule; and it may sound pretentious - but it's how I try to live my own life... Treat others as you would like to be treated. Whether it's buying coffees for the guys at the fuel dock, or holding the door for the old lady... Those things do not go un-noticed.

Any time you run across a grown motherfucker with no manners that needs a good smacking thank these parents that don't believe in discipline. Then smack them the fuck up.

Yeah, he was the same guy who proceeded to tell me that a check for $15k for 20 days of work wasn't enough...

Then tried to back-pedal his way out of it by telling me that "I didn't mean it, I just said what I was thinking..."

My guys should make about $40k this winter for 2 months.

Guess who won't be on my crew.
