And to all: if you tell me this noise is normal for the truck, I'll settle uncomfortably down. But to me, it does not. And I do have a good understanding of how motors and most things on cars should work from the past 12 years of racing and working on motorcycles.

 

That sounds bad. Make 'em fix it. Who wants a New truck that sounds like a junker?

Most of the replies I've gotten are just people giving me shit for thinking my truck has a problem, the fact that the video is not mine, and that my 17 year old self didn't have the funds to pay for a newer Tacoma so my parents graciously helped me out.

 

True. I kinda did.
But to put it out there:
They paid for the truck, but I pay for all other mainenence, gas and what ever. And I turn, I pay to put myself through college.

 

OP, my 2014 4.0 made the same noise as the truck in the video you posted. I got the TSB reflash done at about 10k miles, free from the dealership. It solved the problem for me. I also did the 93 octane test before I took it in for the TSB and the higher octane made the pinging better, but didn't cure it all.

FWIW, I run Mobil1 full synthetic. Started when the truck was 20k miles old.

 

Can you point out at which point in the video the "knock" is occurring? I hear some valve chatter that matches my engine, not sure if that's the "knock" you are referring to:

That sounds horrible. Almost like my lawn mower after I've mowed my gravel driveway.

I don't think that is the same noise.
You can hear it best at 00:03 and 00:13 in the video I linked previously. It only happens when I'm running 89 or lower octane gas, a hot day, AC is on, medium load in the bed, going up an even slight incline, when the truck shifts up a gear and rpm's drop (all which is harder for engine to pull the vehicle weight) and/or any of the above factors put together.

That is why I highly suspect it is detonation not just valve noise. I do hear normal softer valve ticking and that is ok.

 

I've been running 87 octane since the reflash (25k miles ago) and everything's still good. I think the reflash changes the shift points so the truck isn't trying to race to 5th and hold.

 

Which weight oil is in the engine right now?

 

The noise in the video isn't continuous to my ear. Cannot tell if it is just revving at idle or is being driven and thus load based.

OP, does your make the noise while idling, if you rev it up?
