What have you pulled with your taco?

So I got a 02 sr5 double cab. It is lifted with 32 in tires. The trailer light connector in the rear tells me that it has the tow package, which allows me to pull up to 5k lbs.
Now I have a race car I would like to pull. Car weights about 3000lbs and trailer needs to be less than 2000lbs

I was wondering how close I need to keep my towing to below 5k. Do I lose possible tow load due to the car being lifted? Is there any modifications I can add to make the car tow just a bit more?

 

I wouldn't pull that much unless it was an emergency tow...

I've pulled a lot of cars. Typically I use a tow dolly because I don't want to get that close to my weight limit but I've used a u-haul trailer too. My truck isn't happy with a loaded trailer but the dolly does just fine.

I have Tundra brakes on it but with a better suspension, transmission cooler / manual transmission and maybe a supercharger it would do much better.

i have pulled a ford escort on a 13 foot dual axle trailer for about 30-35 miles and i can honestly say is not something that i would willingly do on a regular basis without some serious mods or a different truck...
i would estimate it was pry right at legal capacity and the one hill (5% 1.5mi) we had to pull had the tac well over 4000rpm to keep 50-55mph.
felt very stable as far as sway goes though.

 

i also pull a small homemade 6x8 and varying cargo fairly regularly without any trouble weighing at around 1200(empty)-3900lbs at most.

 

one thing to note my truck had the light connector but not the tow package when i bought it and has since ben retrofitted
...you can tell by looking at the shaft between the fan and the fan clutch/waterpump. if its green= no tow or 3000max. if its orange=you have the actual tow package.

It's on an Icon suspension with All Pro endlinks and big-ass MT 285/70/17 Baja ATZ P3's (E rated). Suspension set up and experience is key.

If you are going to tow something that heavy, I suggest using a trailer that has brakes, install a trailer brake controller, and a transmission temp gauge. These little trucks are really tough. I know guys that have used their Gen 1 Taco to pull well over 5k but I wouldn't advise doing it often.

I wouldn't tow anything that can push me around to it's liking on a regular basis... 1st gens are feather light...

 

On my move from Chicago back to Seattle, I had the truck right at 5100 lbs and the U-haul at 2900. While I didn't set any speed records I did just fine w/the supercharged V-6. Only issue I ran into was the temp gauge moving up towards the red heading up to Mt. Rushmore. A few minutes at high-idle on the shoulder did just fine, and only needed to stop the one time. Never felt braking was an issue (the U-haul only has surge brakes), but I also left myself p l e n t y of following distance.

 

The only thing I would say is put smaller tires on it. Basically, the larger your tires are the more negative torque your motor feels. If you're hauling 4-5k I would definitely throw a set of 29-30" tires on it. That said these motors are build with reliability and not performance in mind so they are quite resilient to high loads.

You can generally work these issues out just by observation. If the thing feels like it's bogging down then it needs better gearing (which can be most easily achieved by changing tire diameter), if everything seems fine then it probably is.

Intake and exhaust are some of the most accessible mods that will improve towing capacity. Other than that, supercharge it.
