4.5 is best back spacing. And if u want it to be just a little ourside of fender well. Then you just need 17x9 -12 offsett

that's just one scenario for that wheel size. you also have to take into account the tire itself.

doing 265/65/17 on a 17x8.5 with 5.5 BS and 0 offset make the tire stick out about 1.25 inches.

there are numerous wheels size/tire combo's that can get it to stick out or tucked in.

on the oem Sport rims 17x7.5 BS 5.5 with 30 offset on 265/65/17 tires, the tires sit flush or slightly tucked into the wheel wells.

there are also the front caliper clearance on NON oem rims that you have to take into account.

even going with my new rims (17x85 BS 5.5 0 offset), if I was to get the 25 offset (only 5mm difference from oem), they wouldn't clear the front calipers.

OP. When looking for wheels go through this simple check list to know if something will fit.

1- Is it in my bolt pattern? - 6x5.5 or 6x139.7
2- Is the wheel the size I am looking for (Diameter is easy), "is the wheel width ok for the tires I will be using" is going to be trickier but easy. Just check your tire spec on the manufacturers website and it will give you an acceptable rim width range.
3- what is the offset / backspacing? the more positive the offset (of the higher the number for backspacing) the further into the vehicle the wheels will sit. The lower or more negative the offset is, and the lower your backspacing, the further your wheel will stick out.

Follow this and it will be really tough to mess something up.

looking for a black wheel that sits a little further out than stock but not so far out that they wipe out the side of the truck. came across the ultra gauntlet that is 9" wide with a 12mm offset. the calculator i'm using shows that it would stick out 37mm more than stock which would be great but the inner clearance is 1mm less, is this a big deal? i'm will also be using 265/70/18 tires if that matters. the last wheels i had were a 0 offset and fit fine but i'm looking to tuck them in a little. thx for any insight
