Advice on breaking in and a VERY long trip

I will be picking up my truck in a couple of days and wanted so advice on this nasty welcome it will get. I will be picking it up in Georgia and will be visiting family around the Alabama Florida area for about a week....THEN i will be driving the poor thing all the way to Texas for another two weeks before heading all the way to California where my journey will end at my new address. So basicaly i will be picking up a new truck and taking it cross country and putting around 3000 miles on it in the first month !! SO, what will i need to do to make sure this trip is as least stressful on a brand new tacoma. and btw, no i can not just pick it up somewhere closer as i will have my two giant breed dogs and family with me (simply put, there is no way around this trip). I have heard the oil needs to be changed soon after getting it and things like that. Any advice? Thanks

 

I say fly the family home to California before you get so annoyed with them that you leave them at a rest stop.

Check and check, my wife said they will most likely fly anyways but just incase they dont, i want to plan for the worst and i have spent a crapload on the new touch to make my music selection HUGE i think that 3500 songs will hold me over!!

 

Vary your speed on the highway (55 - 80) for the first 1k but don't be afraid to push it, either. Drive it like you like it!

The truck should be fine. A nice long drive will probably do it good. Just dont beat on it, nice and easy. Keep the rpms low for the first 1000 miles or so. then once you are in CA get the oil changed, check the air filter, and enjoy your new truck.

 

Just don't use cruise control for the first 1k and you will be fine. There is no way you will keep perfectly constant speed if you have cruise off. Enjoy!

 

You don't have to break them in like the old days. Get in and enjoy.

 

Just get some 5w30. I believe that is what the ower's manual says anyway. Thats what I use in my truck and it works great.

Drive that BEE-ATCH hard! You don't have to baby vehicles anymore. Have some good tunes and enjoy the scenery.

 

I took mine on a 4,000 mile trip within a month of owning it. There's nothing to it. I was eager to get it on the road. Just drive. Oh, and have good music.

 

I disagree... it's still a brand new motor, drive it nice at first, get the oil changed at a toyota dealer around 1000 in your trip and then you can start havin some fun! your gona love it congrats!

 

I put over 1000 miles on mine with a few weeks of taking delivery. I drove it to Northern California for a trip to Yosemite. Truck performed beautifully at high and low elevations. I took it to Saddlebag campground in Inyo National Forest. It's the highest drive-to-campground in California at 10,050'.

Your Tacoma will serve you well.

 

x2 DUMP THE OIL @ 1K MILES and then drive it as hard as you like, just keep the revs up and down the first 1K and like the op said no cruise first 1k

 

sorry to sorta kinda thread jack, but my truck has about 600 miles on it and the oil change sticker says I'm due at 5000 miles. not planning on any long trips, but should i swap it earlier than that?

 

Ayup - Mobil 1 5w30 and you'll be finer than slug snot.

 

Not really neccessary - some change out at 1k to get the early engine wear particles out, but kind of a waste IMHO.

Get your 5k check at the dealership and specify what type and weight of oil you want for your service record. Or, just do it yourself - good thread here for DIY oil change in search.

Mobil 1 5w30 for me.

 

Manual says 5k. I say just put synthetic in it around 5k and call it a day.

 

Does all this apply to both manual and auto? Mine will be manual, any special considerations?
