This weekend i decided to do an oil change on my truck. When i got to the oil filter i couldnt get it to budge. I tried strap wrenches pliers even the screwdriver through the filter method with no success. Now i have a mangled filter with a hole through the middle of it. I researched other options and found a guy that supposedly tack welded a nut to the bottom of his filter on his land cruiser and was able to just wrench it right off. It seems like my filter is in good enough shape for this to work and i would be able to get more leverage on the filter to hopefully break it free. Only problem with this method is welding right under all that oil. Has anyone ever heard of this method? Any other suggestions?

A big pair of Channel locks ( slip lock pliers ) would do the trick. Tack welding on to thin sheet metal to use a base point to apply lots of torque is a bad idea, you waste a ton of time and get the same result as you did with the screwdriver. A hole.

Had this problem on my father 01' sierra after many trips the parts store to find a tool that would remove it, finally ended up drilling a hole in it and sticking a long rod into it.

Once you rip off all the sheet metal (which it sounds like you are well on your way to) you will be able to put a chisel to the base of the filter and hammer it off. You might even try tapping a slim, rigid putty knife into the slot where the filter seal is in order to break the attachment.

Prime example of when people forget to put a thin layer of oil on the O ring and then over tighten it. Good luck.

If all the sheet metal around the outside of the filter was pulled off including the top part where the seal is, would that relieve all the pressure on the filter?

Not sure I understand the question but removing all the sheetmetal that makes up the body of the filter would have no effect on the grip of the baseplate to the seal and/or the seal to the engine block. That's where your problem is.

In the future, use one of these cup-type filter wrenches that engages the flutes on the end of the filter. The strap wrenches can't get enough grip.

If it is really that hard to take off the oil filter..........it may be cross threaded on. Even the rubber seal would give if it was glued to the block, it shouldn't so difficult.

I've used a belt before and a rope once. Double the belt back across the buckle so it'll tighten with the more force you use and it should work. Same with the rope and a loop tied in the end of it.

These filters are bastards to get off, I broke my last rope socket thing trying to get it off. Ended up just getting a pair of grippy rubber gloves and reaming on it till it came off. Will definitely be getting one of the cup type sockets before my next oil change.

Get one stuck on an oil filter once and you'll hate life.

I've had em get stuck more than once, and yeah. I hated life till I got it off again. On second thought maybe I'll just get the K&N.

I put the oil filter in a vice, and beat the oil filter socket off with a hammer. Not fun.

I vice mine and stick an extension into it, then beat the crap out of the extension whichever way it needs to go. Usually takes em off quickly. If I can't get an extension in there then it's hammer time.
