Looking to repaint my cap basket, multiple coats of spray paint is chipping and not holding up well. What's a good spray product that will give me the look and duribility of powder coat?

Coatings boil down to chemistry, and even powder coat doesn't bond well unless the surface is prepped. Body shops use an acid on bare metal to open up the surface for the primer to bond more deeply. There are self etching primers that attempt to perform the same action. Powder coat is actually flexible so I would guess that at the retail level, a paint that works on plastics would remain flexible, as I would think exposed to the sun the metal would expand and contract during the day.

I live 15 minutes south of red bank. If you remove the headlights yourself and bring the paint and butyl rubber (window weld) stuff, I'll throw your headlights in the oven.

I've had good luck so far with VHT brand chassis type paint on both my rear bumper and my frame and suspension. The frame and rear axle gets quite a bit of exposure to brush and sandy ruts in the pines but seems to be staying put.

POR 15, use their metal etcher and cleaner before applying. I've had it on my front bumper for almost 4 years now and no chips

I seem to remember reading that por-15 has a polymer in it that breaks down from uv exposure like sunlight and needs to be painted over. It was because of the two step process that I avoided it for my skids and sliders.

I used POR15 on my sliders, but they were bare steel and was able to etcher first. The basket is an aluminum frame with steel floor and now covered in layers of spray paint. I was thinking a sort of bed liner paint or something similar. Either way not sure if I should strip it or add more layers.

Honestly I think you will be wasting your time to keep try and covering up the small chips over and over again. The POR15 works on aluminum as well as long as it's prepped properly

It doesn't break down, the color just changes to a grayish color over time. I top coated mine with rust oleum Bedliner during the process.

Quite frankly if you do go the POR-15 route you would need to clean all the old paint away. My recommendation would be get all the loose chips off and go for a strong bedliner. Only downside I found about most bedliners is they also fade and potentially look shitty in the future.
