Great point but that wasn't what I was trying to get across. My point was on a snow packed road an AWD Audi or Subaru is better suited than a 4x4 pickup. Everyone knows pickups f'n suck in the snow. That's why they weight the bed. Fuck, I would take a FWD Camry over my Tacoma on snowy, city roads. In the mountains, sure its a whole different thing.

Meh, with some weight and snow tires any vehicle can be driven safely on a snowy road, to be honest.

Now if you are road rallying or offroading in snow, maybe the argument would mean more. Otherwise it seems silly at this point.

Its important to point out that they don't drive on regular road tires when doing that. Special winter racing tires with LOTS of metal studs. They're more steel than rubber. Those cars are also *very heavily* modified compared to what you can buy at the dealer around the corner.

    N. NV, base of the Sierras. Looking at snow out my office window as I type this.
Again, that wasn't my point. I know you can drive around town safely in pretty much anything if you drive correctly.

You're not making any useful or sane point.

Write your username on a piece of paper with a sharpie and take a photograph of it with the snow in the background.

How much weight in the bed is generally best for driving in snow?

What?! Assuming equal tires, I would absolutely take my 4x4 truck over any 2WD vehicle in any conditions.

The more the better but two or three sandbags should help a bunch. Not sure how much that would be, 100lbs or so :notsure:
Not me but I haven't done it with the same tires. From my experience over the last four of our family vehicles. Audi > Camry > T4R > Tacoma.

Ditto here.my wife has had RAV4's for years....with good snow tires they are tremendously better than my Tacoma in slippery winter conditions

^^^^^^^^^ this. 2 bags is a bit light, three is nicer. Although I am assuming this based on a 2005 tundra acces 2wd. I was really surprised how much it helped. Just takes up the space and I am done with storing sandbags

I either read or saw a video several months ago about the differences between AWD and 4WD, and some tests were done on a pretty steep incline covered with snow. The tests showed that the best performer in those conditions was true 4WD with good winter tires. This was not a test using pickup trucks, however; they were just comparing AWD with and without winter tires versus 4WD with and without winter tires if I remember right.

I would think that a pickup truck with no weight in the back would be at a disadvantage compared to a car. With sufficient weight in the bed, though, I would think that disadvantage would disappear. And ground clearance would be a separate factor.

4wd splits the power front to back 50/50. AWDs are equipped with a center diff that some are set to a certain split percent, and some are variable (ie, a STI where you can go 50/50, 10/90, or anything that the diff allows front/back)

4wd/awd is better than 2wd in snow.
snow tires are better than all seasons.

so, 4wd/awd with snows is best option.
2wd with snows is better than 4wd/awd with all seasons.

weight distro also plays an important role.

if 50% of your power is going to an axle with a little bit of weight over it like on a truck, it's going to spin more than on a car that has more weight over the axle.

Thanks for your post. This is what i was wondering. We get dumped on sometimes. At least once or twice a year. I want to be able to make it through and to some ice fishing holes, or wherever I want to go for fun.

If the locker helps like this I am all about it. There is no going fast in stuff that deep. To me....1-3 inches of snow is not even worth worrying about (unless your from georgia).

But....I don't want to be held back from 12 inches of fresh snow. I want to drive in it

An LSD will help you stay on the road a little better than an open diff if you aren't driving appropriate speeds.

But if you understeer into a ditch, a lsd isn't going to help you get out.

sad, considering the new tacoma commercial claims 'built for life in canada' lol
Audi uses the best system. Will send power to the wheel with most traction. Subi is nice as well.
There's a reason a lot of races that happen on snowy roads use AWD and not 4WD
