    2.8L Cummins

    2.8L, 4 Cylinder Cummins Turbodiesel
    [IMG]

Cummins has worked with the Department of Energy (DOE) and Nissan Motors in the development of a high efficiency 2.8L diesel engine. The project, codenamed "ATLAS", dates back to 2010, and was scheduled to near completion in 2014. The test mule for the 2.8L, inline 4 cylinder has been Nissan's Titan pickup, though Nissan and Cummins have since confirmed that the Titan will receive a larger, 5.0L V-8 from Cummins. However, Nissan has been toying with the idea of using the 2.8L platform in its mid-size Frontier pickup model. Efficiency, emissions, and power density were priority objectives of the project. In testing, the engine was able to deliver more than 26 mpg while powering a full-size Nissan Titan pickup.

The light pickup version of the 2.8L Cummins is based on previous engine designs - the European ISF2.8 and the agricultural/industrial QSF2.8. Obviously, a key difference in this variant is the emissions equipment, as the engine has to meet strict regulations for on-highway diesels in the U.S. The engine features a unique diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), selective catalytic reduction system (SCR), and diesel particular filter (DPF); all three systems are combined and mounted to the engine, rather than further down in the exhaust stream. The engine also features a water-to-air intercooler (charge-air-cooler).

    2.8L Cummins Specs
    Configuration:

    Inline 4 cylinder

    Displacement:

    2.8 liters, 171 cubic inches

    Cylinder Head Material:

    Cast iron

    Engine Block Material:

    Cast iron

    Injection:

Direct Injection, high pressure common rail, piezo injectors

    Aspiration:

    Turbocharged, water-to-air intercooler/charge air cooler

    Valvetrain:

    OHV

    Weight:

Approx. 475 lbs, not including emissions equipment

    Horsepower:

    210 hp @ 3,600 rpm

    Torque:

    385 lb-ft @ 1,800 rpm

    Emissions:

Integral engine mounted DOC, SCR, DPF

    2.8L Cummins Dimensions
    Length

    Width

    Height

    24.9"

    25.9"

    28.5"

In testing, the engine has been mated to a ZF built 8 speed automatic transmission. The small displacement 4 cylinder turbodiesel musters up an impressive 385 lb-ft of torque at a modest 1,800 rpm. Though torque curves have not been made public, we'd assume it is relatively flat and broad. Nissan has been hesitant to comment on its participation in the ATLAS ( Advanced Technology Light Automotive Systems) project, but did use the 2.8L Cummins in their Frontier "Diesel Runner" concept, which was unveiled at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show.

Just saying its a very good option that meets the demands of these "diesel junkies." If they want a diesel that bad, I don't see why they don't just get one :notsure:

The Toyota GD engine is a fantastic engine that meets US emissions (comes with DEF) and would be a great addition to the Tacoma but I think its cost prohibitive. They would have to invest in a lot of money and really jack up costs which would make the truck too expensive to compete. The only way this would work is if the market is guaranteed for the long term but that's hard to do with US emissions standards. To make it happen they would have to do what Chevy is doing and outsourse the diesel as the risks are lower. Lots of variables here :notsure:

Curious, what kind of issues does the Ram have?

Ecodiesel is VM Motori. Ram 2500 is Cummins. The new Nissan Titan is a smaller totally different Cummins. GM is Isuzu. Ford is now Ford.

I'm glad we got that sorted out kids.

BTW in heavy trucks it's not uncommon to find several different manufactures offered in each truck, and about a dozen swap kits available if you want a Cat or something else not commonly offered.

A swap would be cool, no doubt...but if you go read any swap...and all the headaches and costs that go along with it...yeah no thanks...for the price of a diesel toys swap...you can go buy a another vehicle...or a bunch of toys....or travel a bunch...etc. Me personally, I am just in to too many other hobbies...to do something like that. I go "yeah, that is cool, but what else could I do with that money?" It really isn't go to do anything THAT much different than a gas engine...but at least I am out $25,0000...errr wait a minute. :p

Emissions leak into the cab (there is a Service Bulletin on this, it sometimes works), fuel system issues, emissions equipment failures...

Just google it. They haven't been the shining example of why you should go Diesel.

Yeah, if something goes wrong it'd be a nightmare to fix for anyone else other than the swap guys I'm sure.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
You are trying to configure website that does not work.. Than claim crazy number
Why not just stick to actual price which is $3730 over the Gas engine, and you getting Tow package included in it.
    http://www.detroitnews.com/story/bu...evy-adds-colorado-diesel-model-year/30771715/

So $3730 more, is less than TRD package on the Tacoma.
You not gonna tow crap with 4 banger. so why bring even up? Thats like saying I can get KIA for $14000 and if I swing by Toyota dealer I can upgrade that to V6 pickup.

    Soundwave and Sterdog,

I do realize that the ED is VM Motori, not Cummins and that the Duramax is Isuzu. When I referenced Detroit, Cummins, and NI, it was in reply to another member who apparently hasn't driven diesels in a long time.

Anywho, the 2.8 Cummins is cool but really more engine than a Taco needs. I'd still take one. :)

It's always possible that the Diesel package will be attached to other options. If you've ever bought GM or used either their fleet or personal build wizard you'll find that lots of options are like that. For example, a certain rear end might be available on the Silverado for $400, but you might need to add a certain engine, transmission, and options package combo at the same time to get that option which is worth a lot more than $400. Hopefully when GM brings out the build wizard for the Diesel the cost can be put to rest.

If you're comparing the LT/SLE trim (minimum trim to get Diesel from your own article) shouldn't you compare pricing to a Tacoma SR5? The TRD's are more like base model SLT's (Sport) and Z71's (OR) in both pricing and stock included options. GM's selectability clouds that a bit but to be apples to apples that's probably a bit more fair.

Oh, I agree. I think though sticking a number on it and doing quick math won't work out because of GM's tendency to tie options together rather than let each one be selected without needing to trigger others. I wish GM would match Ford on just being allowed to choose what is available at each trim level rather than have forced pseudo packages lurking behind the scenes.

Just going by the information that is available currently...it may change in the future, who knows. So neither of us truly knows what the upcharge is going to be...betting I am closer than you though.

Brought up the 4 banger gas, because that is what is in the base model work truck. According the GM site as of today, the diesel option is upgraded from the V6, not the 4 slug gas. Which if true is lame, you would save $1200 right off the bat if it was upgraded from the 4. Go to the Chevy site and price them out yourself.

It is your KIA comparison that is a bit wacky...at least I am going off the same company and the same truck.

Ram and Ford let you build a truck a la carte, not true with GM.
