Terrible 4 cylinder mpg

The Prerunner "should" do worse then the standard base 4 cylinder. It is a raised truck. The higher the truck, the worse the aerodynamics. It should not effect town mileage but should on the highway which will affect average. The Pre runner should do very little better then the 4 wd. The new 4 cylinder trucks are all elevated, do have ground effects deflectors but.....They all suffer mileage loss like yours and do little better then the six.

Everyone who raises their truck gets worse mileage. The EPA figure appears to have been set for the lower standard 4 cylinder model for that year.

I towed the popup in the picture to Michigan and back this summer. I used 91 octane gas for the 3000 round trip and averaged 15. I wasn't too surprised about that. But I expected better than 18-19 without it.!

 

The issue is expectations. Your truck is fine.

 

Not sure I can get ethanol free gas here in NYS.

 

Higher octane gas won't give you better mpg. Ethanol free gas will give you better mpg regardless of the octane rating. Most gases have 10% ethanol in them

 

I warned my wife about the number in the window sticker before she bought me, that actual...... will be less. I guess I should be a trooper like her and not complain.

 

Yes. I used the higher octane gas in an attempt to give it a little extra get up and go. It really is pretty sluggish.

 

Your best bet will be the 91 octane at Shell. There will be a sticker on the pump next to the 91 octane sticker that would say ethanol free. Worth a look!

Tacoma trucks get terrible mileage in general...outdated, but reliable, engines are to blame.

That said, your truck's mileage is pretty similar to my 2014 V6 double-cab Off-Road with 265/75 all-terrain tires and a leveling kit. That doesn't make sense to me.

 

Thanks. Guess I'll live with it. Was thinking about dropping in an LCE header. Will that help with pickup? How tough to tear the old header out with 40k miles on it? Thanks.

That's what I'm talking about. It just seems too low. But DCSBFTMFW says that it's normal, and he's pretty experienced. Found his wisdom on a number of threads.

 

Won't help at all. I actually installed the LCE header on my 2.7 and was a huge waste of money. Air intake helped mpg a little and sounded really good though

 

Don't waste your $ on any mods that you think will get you better gas mileage. The 2.7 is what it is, and was never designed for gas mileage. Reliability and ease of maintenance are the key to the the 2.7 Just my .02 worth.

 

You're mileage seems normal.

You have a 4 speed auto in a prerunner. it's a big truck for a 4cyl, especially with a crappy tranny. I could see 22mpg with the 5 speed.
