Locker mod to a sport

Has anyone heard of putting in a locker to a sport model? I searched for it but didn't really see anything. It's just something that I'm thinking about. I'm sure the factory wiring is there it's just missing the switch and the locker equipment.

And chris, does that apply to the 09's? I thought you could get an ARB air locker for them since thier lim slip wasn't mechanical.

I was thinking more of the factory locker. I figured that ARB would have an air locker. I thought that the factory wiring harness would be there to use and make it an easy clean install. But an ARB is an option. thanks

 

I'm interested in the factory locker too. Anything can be done its just a question of cost. I have an 09 dc lb sport. I too was hoping a part of the off-road package was in the truck so I could just add the missing pieces! There are some in the 4-runner community adding the factory lockers to vehicles not originally equipped with it. Search: retrofit electric locker for a pretty detailed write-up on one such conversion. Maybe just maybe, we can have it all!

 

not only would you need the electronics for the e-locker, you would also need the rear axle housing to accommodate the rear e-locker actuator/motor, the actuator/motor itself, and the 3rd member for the e-locker

there are other viable options to a rear locker other then the toyota e-locker or the ARB that you should consider

 

Yes I know. I'm just saying that it is feasible to do this conversion and sometime soon someone is gonna have the resources and it will be done. Particularly if some of the wiring and stuff is already in the truck. If all you have to do is modify or change the rear chassis harness & you have a donor axle complete & you can buy a switch for the dash provided the wiring is already there... Its not that much of a stretch considering the mods I've seen on this forum. You guys cut off a factory cross-member for a 6 inch lift!!

 

saying that you have a e-locked complete housing in hand could you get the wiring from 12voltguy.com and have it work properly? just throwing out ideas....

Sorry Baby Neil was crying had to settle him down. I was thinking more along the lines of using the factory components. But that might work as well. I just find it hard to believe that the off road package has its own dash cluster, its own dash harness etc. Starting with the 09 model even the limited slip diff is no longer exclusive to the sport model.

 

Starting with the '09s the LSD isn't an mechanical LSD. It's the brakes controlled by a computer.

I'm not sure why you would try to install a factory locker- It's probably going to cost the same or less to install an ARB Air locker with OBA system in the stock axle. ::shrug::

 

I just think it is an excellent feature to add, and if it could be done that way why not. It has some safety features built in to it as well. I already know whats coming next: "Dude you shoulda bought the OR package". No, I bought the right truck. I love my truck. I love the look of the dclb. I love the color I chose. I just want to make it even more awesome than it already is!

OK, say you have the switch & score the whole axle/3rd member from a junkyard. And at the junkyard you start at the axle & get the wiring harness too. Now, what are we lookin at for it to work besides just putting the axle on the truck, wiring the harness to the switch & to whatever power it needs & possibly changing the gearing?

 

I haven't researched it that far but if you do a search outside of this forum for retrofit electric locker someone with a 4runner completed something similar.
