One of my friends did mention that to me one time how their are two different kinds.
He actually told me that there really isn't that much of a difference besides what temps they are good for. But most of the tires you will see in the stores here are more so Ice rated.

But like you said they both perform well in the conditions just one will be better than the other in a certain part.
I personally think ice are better since they will help more with black ice vs a snow and snow you can see, black ice you cant

northern ontario can have studded i believe
    southern ontario cant.

I'm in toronto bro lol. no studs for me. truthfully I've never had a time where I felt studs would've helped me more in my daily driving.

Ya I live a few hrs north of TO. Just below the line, never felt a need for them either. Our roads are usually just snow covered up here.

I live in the east end of the city and work downtown usually depending on construction.
usually take at least 4-5 days before they plow my area.
downtown usually gets icey though. so ya
but regardless it never gets enough to need studs.

I would think that with open diff's a slightly smaller spare tire would not be a problem.

The differential gears rotate when the wheels travel at different speeds when going around a corner. Surprisingly, they don't rotate that much as most of the time you drive going straight. If the tires are of different size, they are rotating continuously, much more then they were intended. Does it break a diffenrtial ? No, but it increases wear substantially. Every car maker and tire maker cautions about putting different size tires on the same axle. If you have different size tires front to back when in 4 wd, it is very hard on the center differential too which is closed. The faster you go, the accelerated the wear. It is suggested then, go slow and for as little time as possible if you have a flat with a spare of different size. That's why spares with smaller/ larger diameter should be used very sparingly. Your call.

It's small so it must be for light snow and small hills. Probably good only for Texas snow.

I know, last year's post. But I am confused about this picture. Shows Nokian Hakka 8 tires without studs, but from what I am reading they only come studded from the factory. What gives?

It's an option up here. Since I do have a nice driveway studded was not an option, but if you can go for it.

    Hi TW

Does anyone have suggestions on tire options for a strictly winter tire for my stock 15' TRD pro taco?

    Thank you.

Might be nice to define winter .

Some difference between Florida and fresh snow every night

Maybe Snow Pack 4 months or longer a year

Then maybe your in a place where Ice is your normal winter driving surface

Thanks for your response. I'm in the high Rockies area so anywhere from ice to snow pack to slush. Probably a 4-5 month winter season.

As it seems 15" tires all I run myself 4 vehicles seem to be hard to find in this area .

Do you plan to buy local or order online ??

I have been buying tires from pretty much one dealer way to long to think about.

I have had very good luck with what ever house brand tire he sold over the years most often coming in $30.00 to $50.00 cheaper then the big name brands

I will post a picture after work of what I am using if I remember

Cool thank you. I'm hoping to get them at Costco for a discount. I don't have the proper tools to mount and balance tires on my own.

Costco winter tire options are limited. I'd say any dedicated winter tire is a good choice. Some are just better than others. All are good though.

Pick up a set of used take-off wheels on craigslist or the like, and get your winters mounted on them to save you getting them switched over and paying big bucks for mount/balance twice a year.

I am also looking for winter tire myself, the interweb has been of no use for good recommendation.

I was about to pull the trigger on a set of studded Hercules Avalanche X-Treme with black steelies. Sub's if anyone has input.
