When you here people say oh I only paid 100$ over dealer cost because I'm special. Smack them in the head and say yes you are!!

I guess the difference between car dealers and other vendors of high ticket items is volume. Dealers have a monopoly on sales of an expensive item that almost everyone needs to function in society. So sooner or later almost everyone has to buy from them. Not so the sellers of other high ticket items.

Just trying to get an idea of actual cost for a dealer on a new car. If goal is to make 12%, can one subtract 12% from MSRP to determine dealer cost?

No, of course not. Dealers brutally rape every customer's balloon knot without lubrication by way of their service department... That's where the big bucks come from.

Example... one dealer/advisor suggested they clean a customer's battery terminal.... for $50. That's a true story here on TW.

No because it depends on the make and model with hold backs and multipliers for units sold l.

Man my guys were trained well. They went in the glove box to fine atm statements. Knew what kind of clothing you had on. Where you lived and what kind of town. What kind of job you had. How much your wife's ring cost. Lol

Let's say your msrp is 35600 on the new tacoma. If you get 600 off you're doing great. Toyota is offing nothing on these trucks. So the dealer wants to get as much of there msrp as they can. So they would make like 3000 at that point. Plus your trade and also on the f&i.

You, as a former car salesman, would you feel as though you'd be "doing great" if the dealer knocked $600 off of the MSRP for you???

I'd hit another dealer if that was their best offer, of course YMMV

So you are saying the invoice prices we know are the actual prices that the dealership pays?

Well you may be one of the few sales people who want to do the right thing. However for every sales person like you I can find 10 to 15 who do the total opposite

Case in point I have talked to several Toyota sales people in NC and MD over the past 5 weeks about the new Tacoma and I was not impressed with either of them. None of them seem to know any specifics about the new Tacoma. Matter of fact I had to school them on the new Tacoma but at the same time they want me to come in the office to try to sell me a truck. I plan on making them sweat before I give them my money

I got 475 off and I was happy with that. This truck is in such high demand they dont have to take anything off.

In fact I know dealers selling over msrp.
