I have issues with that list simply because the Honda Element and Hyundai Tuscon are top 20 retained vehicles. I've known people with both of those cars, they are not something you want to hang onto.

Not sure about you guys, but I don't think I have ever seen, let alone heard of a Hyundai XG350... I guess it must have its own cult following.

There are 168 vehicles on that list.

Maybe that's why they hold on to it... Because no one else wants it in their garage or driveway. Though as ugly as the element is, I could see its utility potential.

Yup. People who buy it buy it for the space. Other than that, it's one of the few crap boxes Honda has ever made.

The Tuscon is a mechanics nightmare from the stories I've heard, especially the first ones that came out.

Exactly. A person owning a vehicle for ten years is more an indication of the owner's financial situation or sensibility than of the vehicle's reliability.

The reason is simple, Tacoma have such great resale that you can upgrade a couple years down the line to a newer model and not lose all of your investment. People who have the money to buy Tacoma's new also have the money to buy another new one in a few years with the new features. The only reason the Tacoma is high on this list at all is because of the reliability some decide to hang on to their trucks knowing it will last.

I wouldn't own an unreliable vehicle for 10 years.

What if you lost your job today and ended up stuck working at Costco for the next ten years. Would you trade off your truck for something newer just because a few things are going wrong on it or feed yourself? The people who buy compact cars and hold on to them are the people making those sort of decisions.

Meh. Logic seems a bit off. With that thinking would one then hold onto their higher depreciation vehicle longer so as to not take a dump when they sell or trade in, doubt it? The bottom of the list is composed of those types of vehicle. The general public doesn't give a shit about depreciation , and I bet if you were to ask 10 people not even half would know what depreciation/resale % even means.

Tacos have some of the highest resale value on the market. That translates into the fact that I can walk into a dealer tomorrow and upgrade to a brand new Taco and know that I'd get top dollar out of my truck. With that starting all of us in the face every day, it's no wonder that we don't keep the same one for very long!

Personally, I love my Taco, and I have owned a LOT of vehicles. It's one of the only vehicles that has kept my attention, and I plan on keeping it for a long time. However, I understand the temptation to capitalize on that resale value.

I think you're going a little off the base path, but I get what you're saying.
I was just trying to relay the fact that it's not practical to hang on to an unreliable vehicle. If it's not reliable, the average person sells/trades for something different. Not necessarily newer, just more reliable.
There's nothing wrong with working at Costco or McDonald's!

This is what I'm thinking. You reach a point where many vehicles aren't worth a whole lot of money. It is more valuable to just keep until it dies than trade it on on something new. With the resale value on Tacoma it is almost foolish not to sell or trade it in after 5-8 years. A better chart would to see what percentage of each vehicle was still on the road regardless of who purchased it originally.

The majority of McDonald's positions are intended for highschool and college work. No one in there right mind inspires to be a cashier, fry flipper, or burger flipper. But if they hike the minimum wage to 15 per hour you will see a 95% automated McDonald's and those jobs are gone.
