New use for clutch start cancel?

@ 3:20 in this video. Is this how Toyota intended to use the clutch start cancel? I have never seen this done before.

My guess is this guy has no clue, but who knows, maybe I have no clue...

 

I used that once in my truck and it was to teach my wife how to start off on a hill.

 

What's the row of lights between the entune screen and the AC/Heeater/fan controls. My truck that row is completely blank .... ??

 

automatic dual climate control...part of the tech package. The row of lights is the digital display of what temperature you want the cabin kept at.

 

Care to *describe* what he did? No sound here, so no idea.

 

He is using the starter to drive up a hill in 4L. Great for saving your ass from a cliff. Horrible for the life of the starting motor!

 

its the whole point of the clutch start cancel button.

Allows one with a manual to not roll back on a steep incline if its stalled. Real handy if you find yourself in a situation where you have NO room for rolling back like on a side of a hill. Put her in 4 low and the starter motor will start the truck and move it all at the same time.

 

Sounds like using it as intended. It sure isn't there for dealing with a broken clutch interlock switch, rather to save your a** in an emergency.

 

Video doesn't do the greatest job explaining it, but this is exactly what clutch start cancel is for. Low torque start with guaranteed no rolling back.

 

Definitely not to be confused with crawl control. He seems to imply this is something you can use frequently. It's really a save your ass feature.

 

Idk if anyone else knows this, but on my 2016 SR 5 Speed 4 cylinder it has hill assist so when you let off the brake the truck doesn't move until you give it gas!!!!!

 

I had the clutch cancel in my 98 tacoma and never once used it that way, I only used it to start the engine when I didnt want to get in and push the clutch. I guess I don't get why you would need it. Would starting the engine like normal while holding the brake not let the truck roll backwards, then you just accelerate like normal?

 

If you've driven manuals for most of your life, this "hill assist" just gets in your way and screws up your hill-starts, until you get used to it. I'm used to it now, but it still annoys me. There is a fine balance between the throttle and clutch when starting, on a hill or otherwise. The automatic brake-assist drives me crazy because it breaks that balance with the brakes. Experienced stick-jockeys don't need it, and inexperienced automatic drivers shouldn't be in that situation.

The true purpose of the clutch-cancel button, IMHO, is to let you lean into your truck without climbing in, so you can start it during winter weather.

Start truck > Shovel Snow off of truck > Shovel snow from truck's exit path / parking space > climb into fully warmed up truck, ready to go.

 

He talks about putting a manual "in drive"

 

And btw, I think the clutch cancel made Toyota not put the silly push-button start in the manual equipped TRDs.

Granted, if the keyless start was implemented with a mechanical rotary switch and not some stupid button, it would be possible to have both, but the marketing people decided a button is where it is at.

 

That's the "D" part of the Manual "PRNDLE" selector, right? It's right there in the center console like a stickshift would be. I mean, "D" slides over to "Up" and "Down" gears on some cars, that's the same as having a stick.

Right?

 

My first car was a very old BMW and the sucker stalled right in the middle of a major road one day. It didn't have a clutch interlock switch so I used the starter to drive it 50 yards to a nearby gas station. Worked great!

Also wholeheartedly agree about the use of the cancel button when starting the car from the outside without having to jump in when cleaning snow/ice or starting the vehicle after doing maintenance.
