My thoughts after 125 miles

The waiting game has come to an end!! I picked up my DCSB TRD Sport 4X4 A/T w/JBL equipped Premium & Tech last night with 7 miles on the ODO and used the 125 mile trip home to get a feel for it.

First, a little background where I'm coming from. My last 6 vehicles have been Toyota. In order; 93 extended cab pickup M/T, 91 MR2 M/T, 2000 SR5 AC Tacoma M/T, 2001 DCSB TRD OR A/T, 2006 DCSB TRD Sport M/T, and for last 1 1/2 years a 2012 SR5 4runner A/T. I'm no newbie to Toyota or Tacoma.

First, it feels great to be in a Tacoma again. I had my 2006 for 8 years, and when I traded it in, I knew the redesigned Tacoma was on the horizon. I didn't want to buy a truck that looked nearly identical to the one I had spent the last 8 years sitting in. Enter the 4runner, knowing it was temporary.

The Tacoma feels tiny inside after the 4runner. No different than my previous trucks, but it will take some getting used to again. The ride felt great, and IMO much better than the 4runner, and from what i remember, not much different than my 2006 TRD Sport. It handles corners really well and was fun to drive.

I haven't had a lot of time to fully inspect everything, but first impressions on the interior is mixed. I love the dash/console and door panels. The overhead console is unremarkable. The sunroof is nice. It's nice having under seat storage again, but overall there's less space to put stuff than in the 4runner. Its funny, when I got the 4runner I complained that there as not as many cubby holes for things. Now I feel the same going into the 2016. Oh well, I'll carry less stuff. The floor and seat upholstery seems cheap, I'll leave it at that.

I love the look of the truck and couldn't be happier. Grill, no problem. The tonneau cover seems sufficient, but barely. I'm not confident the weather strips are going to stay put and keep water out. It's heavy too. Other than that, the handles and latches work great for now, and only time will tell how it holds up.

Let me hit some of the main points being discussed on TW...

    • It's lethargic starting from from a stop, or rolling stop. It needs RPMs!! That being said, I had no problems in the hills of PA. I constantly found myself speeding.
    • CC on the highway was no problem for me and maintained speed just fine. There was more "hunting" on two lane roads not using cruise.
    • Drum brakes, no problem. It stops very well.
    • I'm 6'2" with at least 5-6" of headroom, with sunroof.
    • The seat... I don't mind that its not electric, but damn, its a huge change from the 4runner. The front of the seat is too low for me and its driving me absolutely crazy!
    • I didn't notice a lag in the tranny shifting to drive this morning as some have reported.
    • I DID notice the "harmonic" between 45-50 mph. It isn't annoying and I wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't listening for it.
    • There's no jitter in the speedo or tach needles as someone else has reported.
    • Tank average of 20.8 mpg with 150 miles on the ODO. Not super aggressive driving, but not granny either.
    • BSM worked just fine, and it was dark for the entire trip home.
    • Qi wireless charging works awesome with Samsung Galaxy S5.
    • Heated seats are the bomb.
    • No issues whatsoever with Entune, JBL, Nav
    • CHECK FOR SD CARD BEFORE LEAVING DEALER!!! Mine did not have it and I made them pull one from another vehicle. They will mail a new one to me and I will mail the one I have back.
Well, that's about it for now... If anyone has any questions or pic requests I'll do my best.

For the navigation system. There is a little slot on bottom right of the display unit.

Where would the SD card be located?

    Edit: OK, thanks!

If your navigation system works, then you have the SD card in and you should be fine.

Yeah, that's what they use to store the maps and update them later.

    Good review.
I have been looking at either the Off Road version or the Sport version. Test drove both models at a local dealer and I do agree that both trucks are a little slow but that's OK; I wasn't looking for a drag racer anyway!

Can you provide a little more info on the SD card? A picture is worth a thousand words....

Im thinking it's a cheap-o. I'll buy a slightly bigger one with a lot more bandwidth. I hate slow navigation devices.

    Thanks!!!

I don't know the manufacturer of the SD card, or if there is anything special Toyota does that requires THIS one. I can say that the entune system/navigation is fast enough.

Congratulations.....Well worth the wait? Mine was. Glad to hear you have the "harmonic" between 35-40MPH. We all can't have failing mechanical components.

Overall, I'm very happy! It was a looooong process getting this truck. My only bitch is gonna be the seat, until it gets broken in or I get used to it. I was really surprised to hear the harmonic! I won't lie, I thought you guys were hearing things  What I did was this, accelerate up to 55-60, then start coasting to have the least amount of engine noise possible. I heard the harmonic faintly start around 50, and was worst 43-45. Seems to disappear at 40. We all have different ears, so will most certainly have different reports. I won't even notice it 99.99% of the time, and not really inclined to make a stink about it at the dealership.

Don't make a stink. Take delivery and bring it back for that issue. They will file a service ticket with Toyota, When Toyota gets enough of these they will address it. IF I noticed this on my truck I would not have taken delivery and forced them to address it. One of our members is seeking legal help under the Lemon laws for it. THAT should get a Toyota tech to his backdoor
