BBP color keyed Grille mod

This is exactly how the TRD Sport and Off Road grills should come from the factory. Excellent work OP.

 

Was just thinking the same thing. Probably be a $1500 option though.

 

God-Damnit OP..... You just took my 2 hr .expected Plasti-dip project and changed it into a 5 hr. paint job!!!!!!!! Now I'm going to have to listen to the wife bitch that I spent yet another full weekend day on another "truck project".

That same website sells the rest of the stuff needed as well - other than the alcohol, which you can get at an hardware store. I ordered it all from there just to make it easy and it all totalled up to about $50. I already have the sandpaper and scotch-brite pads.

 

Really good work. If nothing else, I think simply color matching the chrome surround does a ton to make the grill look better. Definitely helps to reduce the overall grill size.

 

Excellent work! Best 3rd gen mod so far imho. I think this solves the fundamental problem with the grille- it looks too big, and this makes it look smaller.

 

This is the first grill mod that I actually like. Toyota really dropped the ball on this. They should have done this from the factory. Might have to talk to a body/paint shop to see about a quote. Cause I don’t have the talent to do this myself.

 

Would you expect the painted grill to be more durable than a Plastidipped Grill?

Well looks like I'm going to do this myself, went and got two estimates, one was 495.00 and the other was 200.00, both were for me to take out the grill myself and replace, no warranty.

 

One you can literally peel off. The other you can't.

 

Absolutely. Should be as durable as the factory finish (hood, bumper, etc.).

 

While I like chrome, the grill on my Sport was a bit over the top after a while.

I saw a couple of painted grills on this forum and I opted to paint the grid section of my grill in satin black. I also added the Limited fog light bezels.

Not the perfect answer and I still may opt for the Limited grill.

 

I guess I was thinking of like stone chips and the like, but sounds like it will be just as durable as if it was factory painted or the factory chrome paint that is already on the grill.

 

I painted a chrome section of an aftermarket gen2 grill with Krylon Fusion for plastic and it held up very well to stone chips. The paint never peeled in car washes.

 

Yeah, it isn't going to be bulletproof, and there are advantages to a softer material like plasti-dip for some types of rock/pebble impacts so it isn't like one is totally superior. Hopefully it just doesn't happen too often, but if it needs redone in 7 years, I am fine with that.

 

Hit that trim ring with some silver sky and I think you will be very happy. The smoked chrome looks good with the silver. I think the color-matched ribs are better suited to the red/blue/inferno/maybe white, but just color-matching the trim ring and blackening the gridwork will really help on the black/silver/mgm colors to reduce the size of the grill. Painting that piece takes minimal skill.

 

Thanks for the suggestion. Next project is to spray some silver sky on the front license plate bracket and the shark fin antenna on the roof.
