I enjoyed this video for the fact it was the first video I have seen that actually talks about the manual transmission in decent detail. I only use my clutch start cancel when I am starting my truck in the cold an am too lazy to hop in and push the clutch down.

I don't think it's really a marketing thing, I think it's a bean counting thing. I'm guessing a push button start/stop switch costs a lot less than a keyed ignition switch.

I don't see the allure of push button start. In the end it does the same thing. An electric solenoid making contact sending power to your starting motor. Turning a key 45 degrees isn't that laborious for me I guess.

<rant>Ok...call me a snob, but don't buy an effin manual transmission if you can't start on a hill. i've been driving manuals (i'm a farm kid) and grew up driving grain trucks (with square gears, starting at 12 y/o), tractors and whatever else we had on the farm and learned very early how to start on a hill. i've NEVER come to a situation where i even had to roll backward to start on a hill. Learn how to drive a manual. </rant>

I use my clutch start cancel button to start my truck without getting in the truck. i'm going to continue to do that... :)

This mindset will eliminate manual transmissions. What about the guy that didn't have this option growing up and is getting into his first manual to learn how to drive a manual... can't be a pro from day 1, everyone's got to start somewhere.

I can not see how by any stretch of the imagination, clutch start cancel can be "like crawl control". You might as well say, "hey this button on the dash is just like another button on the dash that I know of"

Its a great little feature for starting when your battery is dead. With this said if I owned the manual it would have this feature for the bump start , but that can also be done with an automatic transmission .

I agree , never used or like hill assist

Clutch start cancel will not help you if the battery is dead.

To bump start you just put the key in ON, get some speed up, and dump the clutch to get the engine turning. Works with or without a clutch start interlock switch.

Don't think you can push start an auto. No hydraulic pressure to engage any gear (with the clutches/brakes).

Yes, that is the intended purpose of the clutch start cancel button.

Knew i would get called out . Yes you can push start an auto but features need to be implemented to the trans to make this happen .

If my 4 cylinder 5 speed SR comes with hill assist, I'm sure the v6 6 speed does too. Even if it doesnt, whatever happened to using an ebrake? This seems like a nice way to shorten the life of your starter. Plot twist: after changing the starter you have to go to a dealer for them to put the starter serial number in the ECU so you can start the car.

Hill-Assist means that the ECU continues to hold the brakes on an uphill start until you have applied what it considers an acceptable amount of throttle. This is exactly where E-brake starting or farmboy starting (flooring it) are commonly used. The starter motor is never involved, you're already running / idling on an inclined hill.

Nobody is saying that "Hill-Assist" means using the starter motor to creep up hills, or to roll forward on the starter motor alone. Doing that is an emergency-only maneuver. If 2 inches of rollback will drop you off the side of a cliff, then yeah, it's OK to burn your starter motor creeping forward to prevent a total loss. Otherwise, it should never be used for forward motion, for exactly the reasons you said.

This feature is only good for leaning in to start the vehicle (which a remote starter would be better for anyways) without having to get in and press the clutch. To save your rear on a hill by not rolling backwards simply leave the parking brake on, start, put in gear, give it gas and slowly let the parking brake go while driving forward at the same time. No roll back. Done. And yes, a remote start can be installed on a manual too for those that weren't sure. Just leave the vehicle in neutral (if you park on flat ground) and parking brake on and it can work fine for you. Both of these things would totally eliminate the need for this feature.

I know what hill assist it. But what you're not getting is that you can use hill assist to prevent roll back or use the e brake or use a combination. You just have to be quick and not derp it like the driver in your example who tried to do a u turn next to a cliff and stalled in 4 lo.

You can also heel to toe it.

The video shows exactly what it's there for. I used to use it often off road.
