Now there's a classic MIC (Moronic Internet Comment). :( You don't need to be towing a loaded 8x20 to benefit from trailer brakes. I've got a 6x12 single axle enclosed. 3500lb GVWR, I typically have it at about 2500lb. Even at that "light" weight it would increase my stopping distance by 50% without trailer brakes. Coming down a steep mountain road, in the rain, trailer brakes are worth their weight in gold IMO. Best $150 I ever spent.

Anybody been able to fit a brake controller in the pocket in left hand side dash? Or, anyone with a '16 care to measure that pocket opening for reference? Seems like a convenient spot for it if one would fit.

Marked for future. I'd love to pull the trigger on a new truck, but do benefit from a brake controller. I agree about not having to have a heavy ass trailer to still benefit from one. Our 2100+ lb trailer stops a lot easier with a controller. Nice option to buy when pulling through the mountains, town, or on that bridge at night where there was a stopped car.

What was the issue? Did you take any pics? Looking at the pics on their site it should be correct, but I haven't personally installed one yet.

Well, I believed you Jeff and mine is coming in the mail as we speak. I too would like to know what the issue was. The clip, wires, ect. I really don't want to splice into the harness.

My 3017-P is also in the mail, we need someone to post up when they verify the correct harness.

The 2016 Tacoma plug is rhomboid shaped(/ \) and the 3017-P plug is rectangular.

So has anybody actually bought and installed the proper brake controller harness? If so, the part # and location purchased would be great.

On top of that the owners manual also specifies the maximum unbraked trailer weight is 1000 lbs.

Tharris, thanks for the correction...it's a trapezoid plug on the 2016 Tacoma!

I just went out to a 2016 Tacoma and pulled the kick panel off of it to verify the connector. It is not trapezoid shaped, it is rectangular. The 3017-P or 3017-S are the correct harnesses, as are the Toyota part numbers and diagram I posted earlier in this thread.

Sorry @cobill I think you were trying to plug into the wrong connector on your truck.

It feels so good to be right, Jeff. I still would like confirmation.

Trapezoid? Isn't that the connector for hooking in a code reader or ecu or whatever for diagnosic?

Good call. He was probably looking at the OBDII connector that (I assume) is prominent under the dash.

Would the factory tundra controller fit in that small pocket? Could it even be used at all?
