For those pushing the ARB, or the factory locker...... I have the factory locker, the following mod is better than a single rear locker.....

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/51946-4low-trac-4.html

I have owned both, don't waste your money on a locker, this "mod" is exactly what the truck already does in 4WD HIGH. Not sure why people are trying to talk you into spending a G-note....

He asked about a factory locker...
I was referring to the post which he asked for (4L TRAC) explanation, and was dismissed by someone, who was suggesting ARB'S, which was not the original topic of discussion, if you want to split hairs......

Yes I did ask about a stock locker because I thought the factory wiring would be there and it would be an easy install. Since then I have found out the wiring isn't there and it would be a pain.

The ARB and others like would be MUCH cheaper and faster to do since you have to change the rear end. The ARB is the most expensive at about $1000 complete kit but there is several cheaper kits for a locker. I prefer the ARB since I can turn it on or off when needed.

I guess since I only have 500 miles on the truck I might lift it first and then look for a locker and other major mods.

I find it rather interesting how everyone pushes people to start cutting wires on their trucks. Do you really know exactly what those wires do? Do you really know how the entire system works? Oh yeah....just cut a few wires. Let's see what happens the next time you're in a panic situation and all those SAFETY features that are designed into your truck suddenly FAIL and you end up killing yourself because of one wire that you cut..... Just a thought.

Besides that - if something happens to the system and toyota denies your warrantee coverage because you tampered with the mechanics/wiring.

All around - its much safer to just throw an aftermarket locker in and keep your warrantee coverage and know that all the safety features will work when you really need it. Your wife & children will thank you for it.

Its easier and cheaper just to buy the bumper and the hood scoop, and put that on a Off Road...... lols

Not if you want/need a long bed, but that issue has it's own thread.

    Reply to Janster's post....
They 4L TRAC mod, is running the exact same way it runs in 4H. It is a thermally protected self diagnosing system, and your warranty is not affected as long as people are smart about it. It only affect 4L VSC controlled parameters. It is actually safer, as it allows VSC operation in Lo range as well
A locker costs about $1G, realistically will void any rear diff warranty. Put it this way.....I have the locker in my current truck. If I didn't, and the ARB was free, I would still choose the TRAC mod. It is that good. Tales of the sky falling just aren't reality. Remeber when the original ATRAC hack came out, guys running ATRAC with the locker? Toyota added that to the truck shortly thereafter....
This is how the system functions in the Tundra by default, with one difference, the rate of pressure buildup is progressive with TRAC, instant with ATRAC. I bet TRAC in 4L will be standard on the 2011 Tacoma...

If you disagree with me, fine, but don't try to scare people.

And the wire is just a signal wire to the skid control unit, nothing more......

I still wouldn't cut ANY wires on my truck, and you still haven't convinced me its safe. When you interupt the 'engineering' by cutting wires - things don't work like they were designed and the results aren't as they were intended. So maybe I am trying to scare people because they really need to THINK LONG & HARD before cutting any wires on a truck that's been engineered & designed a certain way.

What if you have a base model prerunner without any traction control or driver compensation devices? Which wire can I disconnect to get more traction? Comprendo the aftermarket options. Comprendo swapping the whole rear end, some wiring & a switch. What else is there to it?

Yeah, I know..... but it's one of those things..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I can picture people reading about all this and jump in with both feet not really knowing exactly what the process is, and accidentally cut the wrong yellow wire in the wrong group of wires. You can really mess shit up if you don't get things right.

These trucks are no better than a locked 2WD off road without the mod, so it is a big deal.
Again the system operates in the same manner in 4WD HI. I did cut the wrong wire at first, (on my 09...) a butt connector fixed that. The sky didn't fall....
FWIW the system with the mod is a lot smoother and quieter than ATRAC. And I can verify, it is better than just a locker. I was stuck today, in a mud hole, with a sand exit, the locker dug me in more, ATRAC got me out, amazing tech for sure.

You'd be surprised! If you wanted the complete Sport look (rear bumper, color matched grille, color matched mirrors, color matched door handles and scooped hood) You would be spending roughly the same (if not more if you have to paint anything) amount as the locker.
