What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

That's who I got mine from too.

Did you bleed the system for air bubbles? Did you flush with fluid? Is there a possible leak?

That kit is perfect I bought and installed that exact kit about a year ago. Talked to my Toyota specialist friend and he recommended Aisin over anything else

 

No air bubbles, new fluid. It whines at start-up too.

 

Is it the "power steering whine" or more of a chirp? If it was a chirp I would think potentially loose belt, if it's still the power steering whine I would guess there is a leak in the system letting air in near the pump.

 

I mean...it still works though...lol

 

Guys, for those of you that have had a Tacoma for a while, when do you normally replace all of this? I know 90k miles is recommended, but I also saw that people didn't change the timing belt until 200k and it looked ok. I just bought my first Tacoma with 116k miles. Is there any way to tell that its already been done without tearing it apart? Look for new gaskets in some area?

 

220,000 and mine still hasn't been done...Even though I have had all the parts of about a year now just no free time to do it. Id recommend doing it now if you have the funds to, peace of mind for a while. Usually people write it on the timing belt cover but sometimes thats not the case

 

But you've done your water pump at least once, I'm guessing?

 

So, in the last couple months I've been hearing this noise somewhere near the motor. I kind of put it off because it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it bothers me sometimes. It sounds like a bb in a tin can, or a piece of plastic in a bike wheel. It gets faster and louder as the RPMs go up, and I can't hear it all that well when it's cold. Almost sounds like a rattling heat shield or something, but I stopped the heat shield rattle awhile ago

Nope, trucks been in the family ever since like 20k and our mechanic said he's never done anything to it before I got it except plugs, and a couple 02 sensors

 

Got off from night shift and installed my knock light/shift light. Time for bed now. Gonna go run it and see how much knock it picks up. Then I'll use it as a tuning device for any knock that isn't audible.

 

Yeah I believe 70-90k is recommended, and even if it does "snap" you're not totally fucked because we don't have interference engines. However because this kit has all the water pump gaskets and everything id still change em at the 70-90 mark just because I'd want to avoid any coolant leak, don't want to run hot and blow a head gasket or soemthin

 

If the seller is highly rated and has a high volume your chances are as good as any other place.

 

Same. I'm over 200K. I will probably do the overhaul this spring however just to lower my chances of getting stranded.

 

Got the plates welded up today, got 8 out of 10 bolts, just need to get new hardware for the remaining bolts. Also painted behind it as well. Just have to take some small stuff off and its finished
