    Good TGIF to all,

My '08 Tacoma Baby(~89,000 mi.) is making whining noises coming from the alternator. I have had an independent shop verify. Plus, I am told that the idler pulley is making "crunching" noises.

They also are recommending replacing two other pulley's on the theory that if one goes bad, well...... They are ordering the alternator and I am going over this morning to have the work done. Would you expect an idler pulley to fail at this time/mileage? Is it prudent to replace the other two pulley's that the shop is recommending?

My charging system warning light came on as I pulled into my driveway last night. I cleaned the terminals(corrosion) and started the truck with no noticeable problems. The warning light did not stay on. Also, I added battery water. Maybe the alternator is overcharging the battery??? The battery, Interstate, is relatively new.

Any thoughts on this. I would appreciate it. The shop is one that I have done business many times.

Checking 2 C if is charging is very simple with a meter. If alternator is putting out 13V or better it's good 12V or less NG. You can rev motor 2 C if V output goes up. If they are taking everything apart might as well replace pulleys involved rather then paying for the labor again down the road a little.

Thanks george3. Alternator is definitely bad. I read another thread this morning suggesting replacing all 3 idler pulley's. Going with a rebuilt w/ 3yr warrantee + Gates pulley's.

    Appreciate the help!

Sounds good - you won't have to revisit the problem for another 90K - hopefully. Curious - how much was the rebuilt vs new not from the dealer ? I got 89K on mine so I may be looking at this shortly. Thanks Curious George.

The rebuilt alternator is ~$300+. The dealer option probably more expensive. This shop has used this particular rebuilder for a long time.
