How well will an Access Cab work with car seats?

I got a 2014 double cab sr5 4x4 when car shopping for a kid friendly vehicle. Mine is on the way in Jan. All my buddies ended up with Jettas and I got a truck when baby car shopping.

I have a DC and occasionally install a car seat to drive my 4 year old neice. You really need to push the passenger side seat all the way up so the kid isn't kicking the back of it. You can tell kids not to kick it, but they will anyways.

It does fit and there is plenty of space for the kid, but your front passenger seat is really useless other than for a bag or something.

If your wife doesn't mind sitting behind the driver seat, it's doable for the occasional use

A car seat works ok in an Access cab as long as no one is going to sit in the front passenger seat.

Hey man this is how I have my daughters Draco hooked up. She sits upright but it is snug; I've also utilized the hook in the middle. I'm short (5'6") so my daughter has plenty of room.

    I hope this helps.

Ya know, was thinking about upgrading to an Access Cab and get one of the last 2015 models in case I have passengers but after reading all this, I changed my mind. Perhaps a Subaru might be a better option...

Family fits better in the car, Ford Edge has way more rear-seat legroom than my double cab.

Ok, here is an answer from someone (me) who *has done it*. I.e., kid seats in an access cab.
You *CAN* fit a rear-facing child seat in an access cab. HOWEVER, you need to be careful about the specific model that you choose (one that isn't very bulky), and you will need to *make parts* in order to fit it and safely.

Specifically, the ONLY place where you can fit a rear-facing child seat is in the middle, since you need that extra space between the front seats to fit it in.

    So the modifications;
    1) A piece of 1.5x1.5 angle iron, about 16 inches long (I'm not measuring, just giving you the rough idea of what needs to be done). Drill two holes in it to match up to the two seat belts at the back of the rear center console. Weld a couple of chain links onto the ENDS of that angle to hook on the "LATCH" clips for the child seat base.
    2) A platform made of wood. A piece of 2x6 will fit in between the new angle iron bracket and the back wall. Then you need a plank (about 2x10 or 2x12) from there up over the rear center console. Finally, a leg (more 2x6) from the forward end of the plank down to the floor. The plank will be angled up at the correct angle to cause the child seat base to sit at its correct angle.
    3) Since you are dealing with a plastic seat base on a plank, there won't be as much lateral support as you would have with the seat base on a typical foam and fabric seat. So add some fairly large strips of velcro.

Now here is the thing; while it is certainly possible for someone who is competent at fabricating this to make it safe, that will not necessarily be convincing to law enforcement should the need arise. I suggest that if you intend to make something like this, you should take care to make it look like it belongs there. If you get stopped and it looks homemade, then chances are high that you will have a very bad day.

Once you switch to forward facing, you just need a good compact forward facing seat. Like others have suggested, unless you are really big, it should even fit behind the driver (where the LATCH clips are located).

This does held for when we go to the forward facing seat thanks

DC here with a large front facing and a rear facing cradle. I couldn't imagine trying this in an AC. It's not even ideal in the DC. I'd love the extra room in a Tundra, but can't justify the gas. The wife's 4Runner is a better fit.

I'm confused. You can't fit a rear facing seat on your passenger side?

That's how mine is right now. Rear facing. 07 AC

No kids yet but having a DC I'm not too concerned plus the wife plans to trade her camry in for an SUV as well but I figured I'd share a story from my child hood. In spring of 1999 I was 12 and my parents had a 1998 access cab taco and a small travel trailer, I sat in the back seat for 9 hours from Columbia SC to Orlando Florida. They didn't have 4 doors then either so I had to climb over the half way folded passenger seat to get in and out. I was about 5' 6" tall then too. Ugh. Bad childhood memory.

I have a double cab and in my opinion it would barely be functional as a family vehicle. An AC is not functional at all.
If you need a family car, get a 4runner.

I'm sorry my 6'2" tall ass is such an inconvenience. You should've got a full size so I fit better.

Im 6'2" in my boots, and after riding around with @jowybyo in his DC with a rear facing seat I knew even that wouldn't fly. I have a kid due next month, so yeah it would work behind the passenger side but wife wants two in the end. What's worse is I had a regular cab. So I traded it for an Escape. I know, I know, how dare I. I wanted a T4R, but don't make T4R money. Plus I drive 130 miles a day so 34 MPG in the Escape is pretty sweet. Picked up a trailer for when I need to haul stuff. I wanted a pick up, way easier for the business, but the SUV was more realistic.

That would be fine, if you only have ONE kid, and don't mind it when you get murdered by your wife for cramming her behind the driver....

Murder or not, if you have TWO or THREE kids, then you have no alternative. We are almost at 2 (new one showing up any day now), with older boy a little over 2. He's facing forward behind the driver. New one will be facing backwards in the middle. Wife goes in the front. Remains a possible seating space behind the passenger.
