Roof Rack Questions

ditto, on the pics of the Front Runner. That's what I think that I'm gonna get too.

 

the factory roof rack is pretty much for looks and light duty applications.... if you want a solid utility roof rack i would recommend Prinsu, Baja racks, or front runner. I have the front runner and love it.

 

Can anyone confirm the ACTUAL weight limit for the factory rack? I see 75 lb on some sites, 100 on others, obviously a significant difference if you're getting it to transport two 45 lb kayaks. I'd really prefer the Baja Rack, but I gotta take the cheap route on this one, plus i like that these bars fold back to help cut down on wind noise.

 

I can confirm the max weight on the factory roof rack system is 100 pounds evenly distributed. It is marked right on the bars of mine.

One thing to be aware of is the factory shark fin for the nav/sat sits right at the end of the roof and behind the cross bar so you will need to angle your kayaks more to avoid it (or make sure you stay offcenter)

 

How do you like your Front Runners? And did you purchase directly from their website? I'm about to pull the trigger on these. And any more info on how you installed your antenna on there? I had the same idea.

 

I love the front runner racks. They are super modular and extremely strong. The antenna actually ended up getting moved down because I didn't like how high it was. Constantly hitting it on stuff. Also had trouble getting the rack to act as a ground plane for some reason. Good luck with the rack. You won't be disappointed.

 

I had the factory rack installed before I took delivery. Looks good, and like stated earlier is very quiet in the "closed" position. Within the first few weeks I took a road trip with a 10' longboard (surf). Within the first 10 miles at highway speed (70mph) and wind shear from a few semis, the front crossbar started to come out of the locked position. Luckily, I had used a third strap over the middle of the board which held it in place. I had to pull over and relo the board into the bed and use the bed extender. I see some people say they will use the factory rack for kayaks, which I guess at lower speeds on non-highway roads might be OK. However, I will only use the factory rack for very light use and short distances. Looking at upgrading to a Prinsu.

 

Roof racks regardless of which one you get are awesome to have. I find the longer i have mine the more i use it. Cheers

 

I am confused the frontrunner website says the rack is compatible with the rear antenna. Are you saying you had to move (relocate) the antenna to mount the rack system on the cab? I am asking in relation to a Gen3 if that matters?

He's referring to the CB antenna he originally mounted onto his Front Runner.

It is a CVT and it think it is 78" long

 

will the smallest ARB awning fit on the factory rack? hope so ....went with it for looks and hoped to use it for that

 

I'm trying to decide between the 55" and the 79". Decisions, decisions. ARB, Front Runner and CVT make basically the same one. I guess function will win over aesthetics. What good is the small one? It needs to big enough for a couple of people to fit under!

 

I have it and like it for carrying my SUP. I installed it myself after I bought the truck.

 

Looks great! I think I'm going with OEM as well. I like the look when it's not in use, and I only need to carry a canoe and an awning.

 

So i'm in the process of finding my perfect taco(4 door, 4wd, V6, TRD O-R, Manual, any color other then red or quicksand, with no options). As it turns out, its not a very common configuration.

Anyhow, I finally found one that is close enough(has a roof rack and a bed step). Neither my wife nor I like the roof rack, does anybody know how hard it is to remove and put back the, i'm assuming) rubber strips?
