I had my 2016 Trdor Auto trans since Sept. 30. Today was the first time I really punched it to check out the acceleration. Before i realized it I was at redline and immediately let off the gas. Just wondering if that was bad to have touched the redline. I have to admit it got to redline fairly quick.

I think the Toyota dealer will scan your black box and see that you did that and your warranty will be voided.

Just kidding, should be fine, most likely they rev that motor up alot harder than that when it's built and bench tested.

No need to worry, thats what a rev limiter is for. If you really hit the rev limit you would have know because it would have bounced the rpms right back down, happens more often driving stick than auto, obviously not the best thing for an engine but, wont harm it unless done all the time.

It's fine. You could have easily googled this one though. You will find a lot better explanations on if getting to the redline is bad than what people on here will give you.

It would be interesting. As long as both trucks were configured the same. I'd like to a dyno comparison, also. Might be a comparison on here already.

I redline my new vehicles to break them in. Its debatable, but I went about 250k miles with no oil burn.

Although it's claimed that is not necessary anymore because of higher quality manufacturing, after I got my taco I went on the high way and gave it a good redline. I probably red line once or twice a day.

I have a feeling that it doesn't hurt, and may help, to kinda slowly red line it once or twice a month. Not talking Steve McQueen in Bullitt, kinda redline but just a gentle, "blow it out", kinda thing. I'm not going to admit it, but I have heard that every once in a while, doing a few 360s at about 10 mph across a pasture just as the sun's coming up has marvelous effects on the engine and soul.

Edit: The cows seem to enjoy the show, and even seem a little melancholy when it's over. I don't know.

The red line is where the torque drops off the map

I knew there had to be a point of diminishing returns on rpms as it relates to torque. Now I know.

kerrdog, you will experience a redline much sooner with the small engine in your 2016 Taco, than will be seen with 2nd generation Tacomas. Also, the low end horse power and torque will be lower with your smaller engine, than will be seen with the bigger engine in the 2nd generation Tacomas. Really, the only time this will matter is when you need horsepower and torque, and don't want to redline your engine. It all boils down to what you want in a truck. Just remember not to frequently redline your engine, or drive it frequently at higher rpms, as this will shorten your engine's life.

Thats not entirely correct, smaller engines are typically higher reving engines than larger engines. Typically smaller engines have less torque down low but have a high red line and wider power band. Larger engines have more torque down low and have a lower red line and smaller power band. Not always but thats typically the case

Hey Joe33x. I'm half kidding here but, if what you're saying is true, then why don't they just put the 2016 Taco engine in the 2016 Tundra and call it good? I see Tundra's and other half ton trucks pulling loads no Tacoma would be capable of.
Edit: And I've been known to tow Way More than a half ton Z71 should ever tow, and I Will Never Do That Again.
