When I first took welding classes we had to do oxy-acetylene welding for 3 months, 4 days a week.. Its was frustrating but I wish I could do it again...

Good to know. 6010 was a recommendation from my friend who is a retired gas company welder. I will try some 6013. Thanks for the advice! Yeah I definitely need to get off the ground. Time to work on some joints, and then work on building a stand. I think that plate was 1/4"?

Slag isn't much of an issue with 7018 because when it's tied in correctly it falls off (3G and 4G) but 4G it will get you.
6010 is a bitch in all positions (except 3G where I can get away from it) with the Sparks, and the slag is a bitch on the 6010's.

Our school doesn't teach oxyfuel welding, or brazing, or soldering.
If it did I would stay another semester and learn it, but as of now this is my last semester and if I do my part on the 30th I'll have a job.

Oh damn you're welding on the floor? Keep your eyes peeled for discarded tubing, pipe, angle iron etc and you can build at least something temporary. You'd be surprised at what you can find for free laying around. You also don't need to have a heavy plate table top. You can make one using slats, and the benefit there is you can clamp almost anywhere on the table.

What we use at our school (budget minded) is a steel pip welded to a triangular plate bolted to the floor, it's ~ 7ft tall and 3" diameter, we have a collar that slips over it with a bolt threaded into it to hold it at a height, and an arm off of the collar to tack your piece to.
I bet you can find scrap and build a smaller version to clamp to a table or something.

6013 for just padding horizontal...burns easy and just easier to get used to hand control. Probably better to build a stand or table.
I think I have seen 6013 at Home depot.

Its not common anymore. They stopped making a part of the course about 6 or 7 years ago. Our old instructor was retired from the Gas company and said that was the only method So Cal Gas used in the trenches back in the day. I cant imagine gas welding in a desert trench... :tumbleweed:

    Good luck on the job!

    Thanks, it's a simple test.
6" weld, 3/8" plate, standard bevel with backing strap and 1/4" root opening.
Dual shield and 7018, all they look at is the root and cap, no bend test.
I've done it a hundred times over the 2 semesters so all I have to do is not let my nerves get to me.

You need to be comfortable to weld !!!

The more uncomfortable you are the harder it is to weld.

    No wonder your having problems.

This is where the bad habits start.

You need to get off off the floor.

A metal bar stool will work just remove the padding

a short aluminum step ladder .

anything to get off the floor.

Finally got my pressbrake finished up and painted. Works pretty good! Tested it with a 36" pc of 4" X 3/16" flat bar bent to 90*.

Do you have any sort of back gauge on the brake for repeat bends? That would make for one killer deal. Can I ask a ballpark price on building one?

I haven't quite finished the back stop yet, but it will look something like this. The rods thread into the backside, and the stop is adjustable with set screw sliding collars.

I'm in it roughly $1100 with everything including tax, labor from cnc cutting (Relentless Fabrication), cut fees for the beam, and shipping on the brake kit from Swag Offroad.

    Thanks

Those are air over hydro jacks I have in there.. I have them plumbed into one air inlet, but left both triggers independent. You can see the triggers mounted on the upper left side.

Practiced my vertical flux core and 7018 today, flux core looked really good for not messing with it since last semester (caps were just a little bit full), but the 7018 is kicking my ass, the root looks good (little inconsistencies in speed) but the caps looks terrible, they're to big and my speed is very inconsistent.

I spent time practicing TIG with 7018 fill. I'm terrible at it, but it's fun.

On 7018 Vertical I was having trouble with undercut and rod angle. Finally got a hand on the washing and felt it corrected my speed. On the cap, I speed it up a little and it helps me keep it a little more uniform. I use a upside down smile, keeping a tight arc, minding my angles with 2/3 overlap. I imagine that's standard but it always makes me think when I play it over in my head.
    How are you oscillating?

On another note, I recently bought a new Miller Infinity helmet and love it! Anyone else have any experiences with the Infinity series helmets?

Yep, got slight undercut, and I'm not sure the rod angle is correct (the teacher is busy with other students).

Teacher said I need to speed up on the caps, so it looks like the best way to stay uniform is to speed up.
We run straight stringers for caps, toe on the crown so about 1/2 overlap.

This is my flux core root, pretty happy with it and the teacher said it would get me the job.

Yeah the speed up on the caps works for me too. It took me some time to start feeling the ends "wash" in and get my rod angles dialed in. I still struggle with rod angle and will sometime risk a restart just to re position myself and make sure I'm on angle. You can run stringers which I prefer as well but its just a different approach and you never know when you need to change it up.
I'm right handed and the right side usually has undercut for me.
